Although many will tout 'Viva Las Vegas', 'King Creole', 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'Love Me Tender', this film is the author's personal choice as the best showcase and most entertaining effort for Elvis Presley. Tex Warner and his Manager; Glinda Markel, are working the midwestern small town gigs looking for that angle that will set them back on top where they were. Lo and behold, into the campaign rally; the gimmick comes looking suspiciously like the humble fellow delivering the beer. His buddy says he can really sing, but the question in limbo is ";Who Is Listening?"; as he sets about being the idol of the younger crowd and a scourge of the `Bible Belt'. He calls himself Deke Rivers and it isn't long before Tex steps down while Deke moves up. But as the band progresses, it isdiscovered by all that the oldest values are still the best. Veteran Paul Smith gets the 'Elvis Treatment' on his guitar and is a good comedic foil. Particularly sad was the premature death of Lizabeth Scott shortly after release who, for my money was really the star of this picture. See if you can find Gladys and Vernon Presley. TV Emcee: Jack Latham
