What a brilliant film! Just beneath the surface, this movie made me cringe at just how ignorant we are of this culture. Each laugh was also a painful slap in the face at U.S. foreign policy and the way war has been conducted in Iraq. Brooks's improvisation skit was a masterful commentary to the bumbling trial and error conduct that has resulted in such a tragic loss of life, money and resources. While written as a comedy I suspect Mr. Brooks intentionally meant many of the jokes to fall flat or be unfunny, another way of commenting on how impossibly difficult it has been to get it right in Iraq, the Middle East and other cultures where our difference are like night and day. I am Muslim and was intrigued when I saw the title of the movie and I thought it would be something I could relate to. The fact that the movie was in India and it primarily involved Hindus was a real disapointment. There were some funny parts to the movie such as when he went to the Al Jazeera office but overall it was a stale unfunny dull movie. My husband couldnt even finish watching it, he had to leave the room! To sum it up, unless your are big Albert Brooks fan (and why would you be), I would skip this movie Was this review helpful? That aside, I felt this movie was pretty funny although brooks has done better. Was this review helpful? It was certainly not supposed to be anything based upon fact and the very premise of this movie is our total lack of understanding the Muslim culture, thus the state department sending someone to India to decifer Muslim values, of all places, which only comprises ten per cent of their population as Muslims in an otherwise ethnically diverse country.
Albert Brooks has a very subtle, dry and insightfully humorous way of seeing things and without this perspective the movie goer will not get nor even understand what the movie is all about. To expect any serious dialogue from Albert Brooks is an excercise in vain. You have to love this guy to enjoy him. Was this review helpful? The comedy is recycled stuff of his from when he was younger, really nothing new. Why is he going around in India, wearing indian dress, hanging out with a Hindu girl to figure out Muslim humor? If he really wanted to know about Muslim humor, he could have sat at home and watch satellite. The only funny joke in this movie was that the government thought he could write 500 pages on Muslim comedy in India when he cant even write a screenplay that would make Muslims in America laugh. I was really looking forward to this movie, and I was terribly disappointed. Was this review helpful? And lo and behold, its Hindu! Get it? Probably not, since all youve seen is the trailor before writing. This is one uproariously funny, incoherently incorrect comedy. Its not supposed to make sense. Fast, smart, unbelievable and equally offending to everyone on the subcontinent, the biggest fun it pokes is at Americans igorance of the rest of the world. Like those who really think the producers of the film wouldnt know that India isnt Muslim. A little dark cinematographically, its quite sarcastic in its ripping humor of us. Brooks has perfect cheek and timing, and the parade of characters he meets is a rainbow of what makes this world so darn amusing, if one can leave his shouilder chip behind. This comedy is for those who know something about the world and have been out in it, and find it a whole lot of fun. Its Jon Stewart, not Apollo Theatre. Was this review helpful? India is officially a secular nation. Muslims make up less than 10 of the population. So going by this same thread, Brooks could have shot the film in the United States itself! In this case Brooks ignorance is truly not bliss. Brooks, do your research next time, before rushing off to shoot a movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/20/2006A review of Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World by Anonymous The entire idea of this movie doesnt make any sense, culturally. The protagonist visited India and Pakistan. What is that, like 5 of Earths Muslims? Perhaps the title should be Looking for Comedy in the Pakistani and Indian World, since
A. Not all Pakistanis and Indians are Muslims, and Islam is the predominant religion in Pakistan, by not the ONLY one, and its definitely NOT the dominant religion in India.
B. Muslims come in all nationalities! How asinine is it to learn about an entire religion by visiting 2 countries, when tens of millions around the world practice it?
Yeah, it is just a movie, but the entertainment industry should be more responsible than this. Im tired of people capitlizing on 9-11 too. Was this review helpful? The script is terrible and the whole idea is outrageous. I still dont understand why would anyone to go India or Pakistan for getting to know about Muslims in the Middle East!!!! They are culturally vastly different as everyone knows, even a little bit of research could have proved that.
The film does not have a backbone and Albert Brooks career is now on the rocks. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-11 of 11 Per Page | ||
