Todd Field has scored again. Similar in conception to his highly successful In the Bedroom, its another small close community. This one is more satisfying though because he shows us enough about more than a dozen characters that we understand and empathize with. The interlocking story lines dont feel forced somehow. Up front there is the narrator thing. The narrator is the guy from Frontline and he narrates as if he was narrating a show about the Cuban missile crisis. It was a whimsical touch that was a bit comical. This is a comedy anyway. The acting is superb. Kate Winslet is so accessible and lonely. Since its Kate W. she is naked much of the time. No complaints there. Patrick Wilson is a great foil for Kates Sarah. What an airhead his looks earn him the nickname, Prom King. Some of the lesser roles really shine. Jackie Earl Haley stands out as the pervert trying to blend in after a prison stint. Phyllis Somerville is the doting mother of the pervert who tries to protect her child from himself. Helen Careys Slutty Kay is worth a mention without having any lines. If you dont like the narrator you wont like Kay either. What bad choices we make in this life. What pathetic schemes we use to get out of them. This film makes sense. The chorus of 3 housewives works well and all the preschool characters are well cast. Cinematography is perfect. Go see it.

I knew nothing about the movie before I saw it and had not read any reviews and so I had no opinions formed before hand. It was quite different from any movie Ive seen in a long time. The sex scenes were very realistic and the atmosphere with the sex offender were probably pretty typical of the way people would act having someone in their neighborhood like that. The ending was really surprising and disturbing to me in a lot of ways and so sad for all the characters. Im glad I saw the movie but not sure I would have if Id read about it before hand.

This isnt a review as much as a question...is Brads character immature or does he have adult ADD? His symptoms doesnt want to study for the bar exam, gets distracted on his way to the library (to study for the bar exam) spends the evening(s) watching the skateboarders instead, gets distracted on his way to the library joins the touch football team instead, tells lies to cover other lies (at the dinner party), writes the farewell letter to his wife but forgets to leave it for her, putting it in his pocket instead. I, too, found the narrator unnecessary intrusive. Otherwise, its a darn good movie...very intense, just like life.

This is a great movie....everything worked. Best to see it without a lot of research and (ironically) without reading many reviews....let it be a surprise. If this movie doesnt move you in some way at some point in the story, better check yourself for a pulse. (especially towards and at the end) This director is excellent....the whole cast was terrific. Enough said.......this is a must-see.

This film has all the stereotypical traits of an adaptation initially its the narrative that gives this impression but as the film progresses the length and depth of the story are the tell-tale signs. Two and a half hours seems too short a time to delve into the stories of all the individual characters that it attempts to. Overall one gets the feeling that its trying to cram in too much of the original story- trying to stay true to the novel but ironically letting it down because it cannot be translated directly onto film- sacrifices must be made and not enough were to make Little Children as good a film as it could have been. The sexual scenes at one point are interestingly sliced into a book group meeting full of middle-aged women which would probably be the best part for me.

I drove over an hour to see this movie. It was the best 9 I have ever spent to see a movie. The movie makes a person focus on the plot. Patrick Wilson did an excillent job as The Prom King and Kate Winslet played a great sophisticated mother. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to enjoy a movie for its themes, rather than blood, gore, and crashes. Go see it and you will understand what I mean!

This is a Novelistic tale of an affair is an across-the-board stunner. Providing richness of detail and metaphor, elegantly blueprinted themes and impressive mastery of a constantly shifting tone, Little Children does just that. It is a deeply satisfying film. Its a little unholy mess, simultaneously too Gothic and too sarcastic, that preaches liberation and delivers only puritanism. Its a craftsmanlike but robotic imitation of interesting filmmaking, only in patches, and by accident, the real thing. But hey, The result is a movie that is challenging, accessible and hard to stop thinking about...But in too many recent movies intelligence is woefully undervalued, and it is this quality -- even more than its considerable beauty -- that distinguishes Little Children from its peers.
