I adore him and his acting is superb. For you haters out there, you really just can't appreciate a good movie or are too racist to see the other point of view. Was this review helpful? And help yourself to 2.5 hours that have nothing to do with anything! Wow, and at the end - everybody killed themselves like those psycho kamikaze Japanese always do!!!!! It shows how those japs have no confidence or loyalty to their country! It's just about THEIR Honor, not the success of Japan as a whole. Plus there's no loyalty to each other as unified troops. If a guy thinks that his troop will be demolished or if there's even a chance of being taken over - he kills himself and leaves his troop alone! RIDICULOUS! PLUS it dragged something horrible!!!!!! You honestly could've chopped an hour out of that movie and not known the difference. Worst movie I have ever seen! Was this review helpful? This film is almost 2.5 hours and Eastwood could have easily cut off one hour and it wouldnt have missed a beat. I heard that he even took the same shoots from Flags and added them to this film. The historical aspect is also wrong. The Japanese were a formitable force on Iwo Jima and a lot of men on both sides lost. That is completely missing from this film. Was this review helpful? I would like to say that MINKC says to watch the Military Channel and all i have to say is go watch real war. Military Channel can put up propaganda for all I know. I have to say the Japaniesse did some bad things in WWII but your trying to make them sound like there all bad people. I find it kinda funny also that your calling us immature? I honestly think your 12. Iwo Jima shows the other side of the war and how misreable it was on there side too. Approximently 200 Japaneisse people survived Iwo Jima. A lot of Americans survived. Not that Americans had a good time but you get what I mean. I hope you see it our way MINKC. Was this review helpful? In this case you will note that soldiers are people like you and I. There is good and bad in everyone and that essence is brought out in this movie. It is good to see the other side of the coin in how adversary forces lived through a battle. No difference in thier lives. If youve been there (WW II, Vietnam, Desert Storm etc you will relate). This is not an entertaining movie by any means. It is a movie of life and there are a lot of lessons to be learned. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 2/10/2007A review of Letters From Iwo Jima by Schwenkdawg The film, Letters from Iwo Jima was a masterpiece. There, ive said it. It was a war movie, not unlike flags of our fathers, which, contrary to embracing war as a great human enterprise, showed just how brutal the struggle between beliefs and cultures can be. Although slightly stereotypical, when Nishi reads the letter off of the dead American soldier, and the Japanese men stand up, the viewer is forced to realize that the Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima were just as human as the Marines on the other side. However, unlike flags of our fathers, this movie is not plagued by the duality of having to tell the story of a battle and of a bond drive simultaneously. The movie, although technically one collective flashback, is sparing with the in-battle flashbacks, and they are only used when needed to flesh out a character.
In response to the people who have claimed that this movie is either boring or painfully one-sided, i wll say this. This movie is meant to convey the spirit of the soldiers on Iwo Jima specifically, and does not deny any of the other cruelties that the Japanese Army inflicted on the captured men of Baatan, or the poor people of conquered China. This movies point was not to highlight the atrocities of the Japanese, but merely to tell a story with both good and bad elements, of the battle of Iwo Jima. Regardless of the atrocities committed in other parts of the war, as well as some committed at Iwo Jima, such as the scene where the Japanese soldiers pull the captured American down and start bayonetting and beating him, the truth is that all the soldiers in the second world war were humans, even though they may have committed horrible atrocities. To those who thought this movie was boring, i have but one piece of advice. Never, Ever, seek a career in history.
PS My grandfather and father were both marines, so if i am biased in any way, it would be an anti-japanese bias Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 2/10/2007A review of Letters From Iwo Jima by MINKC1 SHAME ON YOU CLINT EASTWOOD.........SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!
Please tell me that someone forced you to put the UGLY AMERICAN
scene in your film. Ive always heard that directors PAINT with their movies.
Well you painted the classic HOLLYWOOD-UGLY AMERICAN scene when
you painted the CARING JAPANESE -WOUNDED AMERICAN scene
followed by the MUDEROUS AMERICAN -WOUNDED JAPANESE scene.
If you need anymore proof read mature 14 yr olds observation IF NOT
WORSE!
You dont need my 8.00 ticket purchase as you are a multi-millionaire but
you wont ever get it again!
Sir, you owe my late father and all the other men and women who fought
and died in service to OUR country.
And to think I would have bet everything I possess that you would have
never PAINTED anything ANTI-AMERICAN!
A former fan.

Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 2/9/2007A review of Letters From Iwo Jima by Anonymous Letters from Iwo Jima is simply, achingly human. Ive heard a critic describe it as the best war movie ever made and from the point of view that it balances action (plenty), gore (some), character development (galore), with a sister picture (Flags of our Fathers - not as good) and historical accuracy - it is a stunning acievement. Typically, the Japanese are depicted in our movies as Kamikaze pilots crashing their planes in to battleships or as cunning planners of historys most viscous surprise attack and no doubt, the WWII Japanese were a tenacious and unrelenting enemy. By the end of this film youre in a place where your perspective is almost divine - seeing what war does to people - seeing angels and devils on both sides and plainly, youre witness to catastrophe at its most tragic. That feeling, being connected to the humanity of all involved, is the genius of this film. Youre in everyones skin knowing what each has seen and experienced, understanding the perspective of each, knowing the unknowable and then just watching, helplessly, as actions unfold with sad inevitability. The film stands alone but having seen Flags of our Fathers does enhance the exeprinece somewhat. Go see this if you can only see one! Was this review helpful? The sub-titles were a little annoying to read, but the movie keeps you watching. It is a sobering story that leaves you thinking and talking after leaving the theater. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/28/2007A review of Letters From Iwo Jima by PrairieLight1 The above title is a play on words re The Good German. Sixty one years ago a movie such as Letters from iwo Jima would not have been received well in Canada and the U.S. That is because at that time, when we were at war with Japan, the Japanese military behaved in ways which were brutal, savage, barbaric and cruel in the extreme as evidenced by Japanese prisoner of war camps, the death marches, suicide pilots, etc. I had to ask myself if this was an attempt to whitewash the memory of what happened during the battle of Iwo Jima. It took a concerted effort to deal with my doubts and reluctance in order to review the movie objectively. What I found was an honest, realistic portrayal of what life must have been like for the Imperial army and naval forces stationed on Iwo Jima. The movie depicted the Japanese adherence to duty as a cultural norm. This explained everything. While I do not fully understand or accept such rigid adherence to patriotism it made sense in the behaviour and thinking of the characters. The main character, Shigio the baker, is skillfully written as Everyman. A simple, common man of humble origin his only intention is to survive and return to his wife. Shigio survives due to the various influences of synchronicity, chance and his own determination to live. It is a testament to the authentic rendering of this character that I was able to identify with him. The film is successful in creating characters with which people can identify- after all, who wants to die in battle? The screenwriter brings the humanity of this humble baker to life. His story resonates down through the years to let us know that the common soldier in Imperial Japan circa 1945 was in fact very much like the rest of us. That is the redeeming factor of this movie. That is its strength. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/13/2006A review of Letters From Iwo Jima by Charles1030 Clint Eastwood tells the story of the Battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese side in Letters From Iwo Jima. You can view it as a bookend to his recent Flags of Our Fathers, or on its own, because the movie is an unprecedented, a sorrowful and savagely beautiful elegy that can stand in the company of the greatest antiwar movies. If Flags is more complex in its ambitions and structure, the leaner, simpler Letters is even more emotionally devastating. Superbly acted, unblinking and unhysterical, it looks beyond politics into the hearts and minds of the men we needed to call the enemy, and lets us see ourselves. Was this review helpful?
