He is lonely and afraid. His family wants to help but he won't have it. This is a story of people looking out for one another, seeing something they can't really understand or believe. Maybe Lars is ill, maybe his struggle is one we partly all share. He is trying to connect back in to life.We want help. Those around him look past what they see and lend a hand.It is idealistic, unrealistic, sweet and somehow satisfying. The far-fetched concept goes for broke and somehow works. Was this review helpful? In our world of ME, ME, ME... this movie revisits a time that has long since passed. I was taken by how simple it would be to care for one another if we could only stop thinking about ourselves.
Funny and heart warming, and in sharp contrast to "There will be blood" and "No country for old men" this film focuses on the admiriable qualities of the human spirit and what we can accomplish together when we look after one another. this film takes a premise that has potential and just tosses it down the drain by going down a path of bland feel good pop psychology nonsense that is insulting to watch.
this film isnt even average, its truly mediocre. do not waste your time. Was this review helpful? Thankful I went to the $1.00 movie. GARBAGE GARBAGE GARBAGE!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 12/11/2007A review of Lars and the Real Girl by movieextra This movie shows why Ryan Gosling is one of the few movie stars worth paying the money to see a picture on the big screen. This movie is about a socially inept young man and a story about love, hope, friendship and understanding. If Ryan Gosling doesn't get the Oscar for best actor, there is something wrong with the nominating and voting committees. This is not like any other movie you will ever see; well written, well acted, very well directed. Patricia Clarkson does an outstanding job of working with Mr. Gosling-- you can understand how everybody's life has something missing they choose to ignore, many do not realize it until they meet up with Lars' complete openness in how he sees the world around him. He brings the community full circle in bringing together with understanding. A great movie for the holiday season. No blood, no drugs, no violence, just a funny, sad, lively, solemn movie for everybody. Was this review helpful? This is one of the most poignant depictions of growing up without the security of a mother's love I have ever seen. Moreso, with very little dialogue, Gossling's fear and dread of loving and losing is exquisitely portrayed in every scene. His character is the embodiment of how far some are willing to go to protect themselves from loss, always to their detriment. But in this case, Lars has several mothers-in-waiting--his expectant sister-in-law, a childless yet maternal doctor, and the local matrons who sense what his character is missing and gently persuade him to accept their gift of love. The males come around a bit later, but they do so admirably and believably--a testament to the excellent screen-play and direction.
Most guys will be tremendously disappointed in this movie as it is packaged as some lurid joke involving an internet love-doll. Most women will have to choke back a few tears along the way. It's too bad the money-men didn't promote the movie as it deserved to be. It is far and away one of the most sensitive portrayals of human need--and the need to give--on the screen today. This is a slow movie and maybe better to be rented. It was a little unreal about the community and family support of the main character. Was this review helpful? Ryan Gossling was fantastic as was the supporting cast. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-9 of 9 Per Page | ||
