The lake isn't actually called 'Lake Placid' - so says one of the chrarcters. Whatever the name is, there is something in the water which is - big, buff, eats human meat, and gets fed from a li' ol' lady who lives close to the lake. The one problem is that it isn't original, - the whole croc idea. The rest though, is hilariously funny, with a - millionare mytholgy professer (Oliver Platt) who has a hobby of swimming with crocs, and also got off on the wrong foot with the local sherif, who is dead keen to the big, fat, gun of his to blow up the monster, a palentologist (Bridget Fonda) who claims herself to be a)allergic to timber, b) never been in a tent before, and also incredibilly moody, because she was dating her boss, who dumped her.In the middle of all this is Fish & Game guy Jack Wells, played by Bill Pullman. Jack tries to keep order in the camp and prevent them from killing each other. Jack also gets off on the wrong foot with Kelly, the palentologist. But by the end, that ... er... changes. The graphis of people having their head copped off etc... was great, and this is a pretty good effort from the guy who was a writer for 'Ally McBeal''Lake Placid' mixes the mild sort of action/thrill with dry, sarcastic, rude humour, a combination that leaves you rolling on the ground with laughter, and totally tense when the sort of freaky bit begins.I suggest you watch this, because even though it didn't get a warm welcome from critics, it is a very rare type of film.4 out of 5
