Night S.; 'there is always something interesting and different about his films'. Every one, so far, has prompted a good conversation between my wife and I. And what is this...? A site for aliens? Doesn't anyone know how to write the English language? Laughable! Was this review helpful? You were told at the beginning of the movie of how the story goes, you were told in the middle of the movie how it was going to end. If you walk into a movie expecting what the director gave you the first time i.e. The Sixth Sense, then yes you will be disappointed. The reason why this movie did not work for so many people is because it is based on a children's fairy tale. And what do fairy tales consist of, use of your imagination.....So many people have forgotten how to use their imagination or are just too dam blind to realize that for just that moment you have to let reality escape you to understand what the director was trying to do. I thoroughly enjoyed all of his movies with the exception on Unbreakable, I could never watch it, it just did not hold my interest. But Signs, The Village, The Sixth Sense, and The Happening were all very good to me and I could not have asked for more from each one. So if you choose, watch the movie again, be creative and just think for that one moment that in a childs minds all of this could happen and that is what made it so darn good. Was this review helpful? Nothing is developed enough to have a purpose, and the story is so random its disgusting. At the end, you feel like nothing was accomplished. A good movie...needs to be the opposite of these things, and does NOT need to be Cliche in order to accomplish this. Everyone who enjoyed it from an artistic point of view, is someone whom has lost their sense of what is good and what is bad. Youre the kind of person who is always trying to find ways to make things that are truely bad ...seem....good.Why? Who knows. It certainly does not fit in the category of making the best of things in my opinion. It is not art, it is a dumb idea(lets turn a crappy fairy tail into a movie) that is justified in peoples mind as art, so they can convince themselves it isnt just complete bull. So please, DO NOT see this. Was this review helpful? The previews portrayed Lady in the Water as more of a horror flick, but then again they did the same with The Village and we all know how that one turned out.
So, I went it with a fairly open mind...and was still surprised by what I saw. It wasnt scary, or suspensful, or anything really. There was one part that I felt was sad, and it had nothing to do with the movie really.
I understood the movie. Thats not the problem. Its just a bad a movie. The characters are way too simple, the plot develops too quickly and its too simple. None of them question anything, or fear for themselves ever...and although it would be nice if the world worked that way, it doesnt. Its already a fantasy type of story, the characters could have and should have been the anchor of the movie. They should have been what keeps the plot grounded, makes it seem like it could happen, even if we know better.
Really, I can see a lot of possibilities for the plot. Its not a bad idea, just bad writing. Unfortunately, bad writing makes for bad movies. Was this review helpful? If you dislike the thought of actually using your head while viewing a movie, maybe choose something else. And if you dont like movies that cause you to reflect on issues, its definitely the wrong choice.
However, if you are in the mood for a film with minute attention to detail, a clever plot and great characters, this is a must see.
I suppose it had to be marketed as a horror film because theres hardly another category for it. Its in turn hilarious, moving and thrilling.
One of the best films I have seen this year. Was this review helpful? Its just different!! I really liked the story and the characters alot...it was magical...but in a very dark way. Night got cerebral on us with this film, it is a more intellectual approach to a fantasy horror movie...it is wordy and a bit preachy and the death scene of the writer character was way way overdone...not gory..but wordy!! He describes his scene before it happens as in the script...i did hate that one scene...but overall i did like the movie and it delivered quite a few laughs and some jolting scares ....but there was not enough of the jolts. Night just does not make bad movies...there is always something interesting and different about his films and this film is interesting and different...a cerebral, intellectual drama fantasy horror flick.....you have to let yourself become involved with the characters in this movie.....and believe what they are going through....not his best work by any means but nonetheless a very interesting and entertaining film.......I am ready for his next adventure!!! I mean, hes the ONE person Ive heard of that didnt like Crash! Lady in the Water would be disappointing if you were expecting a thrill-fest, and admittedly the trailors did make it look like it might be. But rather it is a sweet, sometimes thrilling, surprisingly humorous story that is designed around a central message Some Fairy Tales are worth believing in. Personally, I think that this world could use a little more magic in it. Lady is the Water has fun and interesting characters, and it keeps you guessing as to the role each one is destined to fulfill in the story. I enjoyed it very much, and really, who needs a twist ending? Signs didnt have a twist and it was still a good movie. M. Night himself said that it wouldnt, so dont go in trying to figure out what it is and make yourself disappointed. Its a good movie that shows us that its ok to believe, even in fairy tales. For someone who did not like this movie , you sure cant put your thoughts into the right words. It makes me wonder if the reason you hated this movie was because you dont understand how M. Night Shyamalan writes, or you just could not comprehend it. Learn to use spell check, a dictionary, or take a grammer class. Dont write a review if you cant spell. This movie was great... End of story. Was this review helpful?
