Kingdom of Heaven is a story set in Medieval Europe and the Middle East. The protagonist is Balian (Orlando Bloom) who is a blacksmith in a small village in France. His child was a stillborn and his wife commits suicide. In the beginning of the film, he is very depressed and does not speak much for the first few scenes. His real father Godfrey -who is also the younger brother of the lord who rules the village- is a knight and a baron in the Holy Land. He's coming back to his home for a visit and remembers that he once did something with the local blacksmith's wife, so he goes to find out if Balian, the blacksmith's eldest son, is actually his son. When Godfrey decides that Balian is his son, he asks him to go to Jerusalem with him. Balian refuses at first but then circumstances force him to change his mind.
For me, Balian is a reluctant hero (usually the best sort of hero) who slowly finds himself. Orlando Bloom is brilliant as Balian; I think it is his best piece of work to date. I got really absorbed into his character and whenever I'm feeling depressed, I just go along on his journey of finding himself and it encourages me. The film also has great messages concerning religion and just being a good person. I will never forget the Knight's Oath. Was this review helpful? Ghassan Massoud(sp?) was also just awsome as Saladin, and of course there were others but to me those two were the best and are basically a reason why people should see the film. But a friend told me to Watch the movie and you decide! so I did and I loved the movie. Its a good movie if you love history, but you watch it just for Orlando Bloom you will be bored to tears. Despite what some people have said I thought it was a great movie. I was surprised how great Orlando Blooms acting was, I saw him in The Lord of the Rings movies and thought he was just a pretty face that couldnt hold a movie on his own, but I changed my mind after I saw him in this movie. The movie makes you think twice about what you thought you knew about the history of Jerusalem and the religions that believe is a holy site. It is I little slow in starting, but it is well worth the wait. By the end of the movie you believe Orlando Bloom is Balian and you wished the ending was different. Dont believe everything you hear make up your own mind and give it chance you wont be disappointed. Was this review helpful? I think Orlando done an excellent job! If you like this type of movie I highly recommend it!!!!! Was this review helpful? I dont know why some viewers badmouth it the way they do. Its a movie that you should watch alone, not with a bunch of beer-drinking friends who dont even bother to get into the emotions of the characters. All actors did a great job! Orlando, Bravo! i never liked orlando blooms acting in the first place.
i found this movie pretty offensive to muslims.. whats up with the scene when the muslim troops are dancing and clapping with joy for hitting the walls of jurusilim with fireballs??
the battle scene are really bad .. all u see is blood splashing everywhere in slow motion and a blur.. and there were about 3-4 battle scenes or maybe more i just lost count from the boring routine.. which made me go to sleep .. i never bothered watching the ending..neither should you!
i have seen historydrama movies like troy and gladiator .. this movie is not on the top ten history movies not even in the top 100! take my advice and ont waste a precious 2.30 hours go watch something worthwhile.. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 2/11/2006A review of Kingdom of Heaven by Maleficus_The_Red Terribly boring movie. My daughter and I have a list of movies that we wish to own. This was on the list. KOH has been removed. Muslims were upset about this movie. The only reason that I can see is because Muslims were portrayed in such a crappy flick. The dialogue was too lengthy and boring. The action scenes were okay, at best. Just when you think the movie is going to get good, they completely shut it down with tedious politics and butt kissing. I really wanted to like this movie. I am sorry to say that I have no desire to ever see it again. Was this review helpful? Orlando Bloom cant seem to realize that the pathetic puppy dog face thing he does just cant hold the screen for 2.5 hours. The ending was uneventful and ambiguous. Fight scenes are often started and it goes all slow motion blur and then the next thing you know, its the following scene. Its like, while Im watching, I fall asleep on the operating table and wake up in the recovery room! Ridley Scott has gotten really lazy since Gladiator (Which I thouroughly enjoyed).
Surprisingly, the best acting job in the whole movie is done by Edward Norton, who plays King Baldwin. Liam Neeson still seems to be in Batman Begins mode, as his character is no different at all. Maybe hes just a bad actor! Actually, come to think of it, his character in Star Wars Episode I is pretty similar too. Terrible! Was this review helpful? The movie was adapted from past events, and i am glad that the R. Scott modified it in quite decent way. Some may say to you that the movie was predictable but let me remind you ,the plot of the story is true. An awesome movie..beautiful music ..great editing ....only R .Scott can provide so many things in a single pack. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 1/7/2006A review of Kingdom of Heaven by queen_of_imladris I am sad to say it, but KOH was really a terrible movie. The characters were ill-casted, the plot moving slower than any movie Ive seen before. Orlando Bloom, while generally a sub-par actor anyway, was exceedingly disappointing (worse than we expected him to be). My group, tired of watching the lousy acting, terrible action scenes, and general boredom, quickly left the theatre after 1.5 hours and went to see Star Wars 3 instead- a much better decision.
Dont rent the DVD. For a good action-adventure movie, try the Lord of the Rings trilogy or Troy instead. Was this review helpful? It was so bad in that respect that I could make up jokes for scenes 5 minutes in advance (I pull Mystery Science Theatres on almost all the movies I watch) But, other than that it was a good movie that I do recommend at least renting, if you havent seen it before. I do not, however, recommend you buy it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 10/22/2005A review of Kingdom of Heaven by Anonymous When I first heard about this movie I was thinking"oh god, another movie like 'Pirates of the Carribean' where Orlando Bloom will do some acting that is not top notch but acceptable, and the writer and director will totally screw up the hisortical facts and hollywood would've let us down again". Obivously I was wrong. This movie was surprisingly good.
The cinematography was very good. Lots of good composition shots where something else was going on behind the character. The lighting was exceptional too, they did good with the inside shots lighting.
The acting was really good, Orlano Bloom is obviously becoming wiser in acting. It was good to see Liam Neason acting in another good movie, he did a good job too. I would love to see the guy who played the leper king of Jerusalm. He had a good voice.
The storyline was shown splendidly. The historical facts seemed right, though I don't much about the history. But, one part I didn't get. The leper king's sister. She didn't seem to have to be there. and what she did at the end didn't make much sense. But, what I did like is how they show her and Orlando having sex without showing it go all the way. Kudos to the director for that.
Overall a good movie Was this review helpful? The acting was great, the story was well written, and well scripted. This movie is worth watching several times. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
