While working as a bus boy, Danny defends the honor of Maxie's floozy who ultimately discovers his talent for singing. Maxie's rival also gets wind of his talent and importunes him, hoping to get his club the ";King Creole"; back on its feet. After getting mixed up in a robbery, Danny sees a legitimate opportunity to help his Father get out from under the thumb of a chintzy pharmacy job. Never one to be refused by the town he ";owns"; Maxie determines to get his singing bus-boy back into his own club by any means necessary causing Danny to become embroiled in another heist that may put him in Maxie's power and cost him any happiness his family currently has a shot at. Walter Matthau growls it up as a hard talking Don and Carolyn Jones nearly steals the show as the forlorn chanteuse in Maxie's care. Contrary to the opinion of ";experts";, it is the considered opinion of the author that Elvis Presley was anatural at acting or whatever performance he attempted making it easy for the stoic Michael Curtiz to conform to Col. Parker's rock-n'-roll production design and still managing to carry off Robbins' illustrated visions of the hard life inStoryville. Oddly enough, the only song from this fim to chart (";Hard Headed Woman";) is only heard very briefly. An entertaining film and a feather in the Presley cap.
