I took the whole family...teens and all....and guess what? nobody had heard about it! this movie should be a blockbuster...not a flop.....Whoever marketed this movie should be fired! To be honest I had seen a couple of commercials...but I did not know what the movie was about...I am glad i took a chance and went to see it...it was a great movie and well worth the $160.00 (???!!) to take the family to see......... The plot moved along, I was never bored in any part of the movie. You must pay attention to what's being said or you might miss an important piece of the plot. Great special effects, sentiment and humor in good balance and the cast plays it straight --- none of the tongue in cheek stuff that ruins some of these adventure movies. Sign in 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Just what I was looking forPosted: 3/11/2012A review of John Carter by W-W-Lawrence Just had an opportunity to view Disney's new movie based on Edgar Rice Burroughs's novel "John Carter of Mars" -- the first in a series (books, not movies). I read and enjoyed the entire series 50 years ago -- yep, I am that old. What a delight it was to watch a movie devoid of hidden meanings and subtle political messages. John Carter was free of the concerns of how Rabid Republicans are going to over come the ills caused by soft democrats or the rants of political hacks willing to say anything (and i think sell their mother's just to get their political party's nomination). It was a chance to forget, for 2 hours and 12 minutes, the world where the presidency is open for grabs by not the most qualified, but the one with the deepest pockets.
I needed this movie and it served me well, following as it did the plot of hero faces challenge, meets a beautiful woman of equal charm, bravery, wit and fighting skills with whom he can fight the "good fight" to overcome evil only to be challenged for the object of his affection, meet the challenges, overcome them and, in the end triumph.
Simple story from less complex times and the best way I could imagine to escape the reality of our world momentarily to recharge my batteries. I enjoyed the movie, the acting and the special effects -- I enjoyed everything about the movie and would encourage you to see it, too. The 3D effects aren't bad, either. In my book, for a way to escape on a cloudy, chilly and damp weekend, I give it a 10 out of 10.

Excellent narrative, good acting, cinematography works all the time, fabulous writing -- truly they did a great job with the Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'John Carter of Mars' saga -- they put his message in without putting the character on a soap box; they edited the story with just enough exposition -- really fun to watch. I say see it!!!! Enjoy the spectacle and learn a little bit about a great classic sci-fi writer. Was this review helpful? we all know that Mars is pretty dead. But, oh, what a fantasy--
entertaining trip to the beyond can be taken in "John Carter".

CGI finally caught up 40 years later with a story that preceded Star Wars. A planet far far away, Green men of Mars, A Princess in distress, flying war ships, Radium energy, a Martian language, and sword fighting. All this was written 100 years ago, hows that for SyFi? Burroughs was the for-runner of all Science Fiction stories. This movie brings the original story of how John Carter of Virginia transfers to Mars up to date and is done quite well. This movie might get viewers interested in reading the John Carter books (Nooks). Was this review helpful?
