Catagorizing this film into a specific genre, would be unfair to this movie itself. While it is clearly horror, in its impact of keeping millions out of the water after viewing it, there is so much more to it. Comedic relief is around ever corner, edge-of-your-seat suspence lurks under every wave, not to mention the abundance of classic quotes!
I was devastated to hear of Roy Scheider's passing this morning, but he will always be regarded as the king of quotes: "You're gonna need a bigger boat"!

I almost fell asleep when i watched it. It was mainly about three guys who get together and mundanely discuss how to catch the great white. Rarely is there any scare in this movie. The only good part is the end as the one guy plots a method to kill the great white by himself. Otherwise, this movie was a big disappointment for me. Was this review helpful? Then I saw Jaws. Have not been in the water since 1975, and will not be in the ocean ever again. Sheer nightmare cold sweat terror. I know I could have been a male version of poor Chrissie. Her death is pure Spielberg directing. He clamps those big teeth onto your psyche in the first minute, and wont let go. Everything about this film is excellent, even if shark attacks are rare in the real world. It stopped my swimming days anyway. Was this review helpful? The fear comes from being surrounded by water and the unknown beneath you that you cant see. Its desperate fear, you cant run or hide. No matter who you are or how good a swimmer you are, you are out of your element. JAWS affected me deeply, but thats okay cuz I dont live anywhere near an ocean anyway, wouldnt go in it if I did. Sign In 2 out of 2 users found this helpful the best of the bestI will say it again the first jaws is best. it's the only movie in histoy that put a crunch on a beach town's economy, every where it was shown.<br>no one was going in the water... all in all i feel it's the best shark attact movie made and if you have the d.t.s version its even better.<br>some of you who say its boring in the reviews you must live in the mid west. but for costal people its straight up terror... just think about a 25 ft 8000 lb pitbull moved into your mid west town how would you react .............. anyway be in good health all.... There are a ton of movies like that, especially in the 80s:Where it seems the movie should have a higher rating, but doesnt deserve an R, so they gave it a pg. Thats why they came up with the brilliant plan of creating a rating in between. Anyway, Jaws is great. Its a classic. The very first ever blockbuster. Was this review helpful? The PG rating was twisted. You don't say a show with skinny-dippers, gore, violence, language, and blood is just PG. That show should have received a PG-13 rating, AT LEAST. When I watched the beginning of show, when Chrissy strips while running, and goes skinny-dipping into the water, I immedietly dis-liked the show. And when she's violently jerked around in the water, being killed by a vicious great-white, screaming wildly, and swearing, finally being pulled under the water's surface permanantly, I began thinking about writing this candid review. <br>This show was a horrible show. Although it has scored well for acting and special effects, I rate this show with a big fat F-, because of it's profuse violence, I hate it, and will NEVER recommend it to anyone!! The inevitable battle with the shark at the end is the stuff that suspense movies are made of. Jaws keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
