Ishtar is the most wrongfully maligned movie of all time. Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman are hilarious in this buddy farce about the fantastic misadventures of two passionate, sincere songwriters who can neither sing nor write, but who truly believe theyre great, think theyre Simon and Garfunkel. The deluded duo cant get a gig anywhere but Morocco, where they become entangled in revolutionary espionage and ride around the desert on a blind camel. Ishtar was the movie which made me decide to like Warren Beatty. He and Hoffman have dynamic charisma together, each playing their characters with endearing sincerity, which adds to the hilarity. Every scene crackles with memorable dialogue and slapstick gags. One of my personal favorite lines comes when Hoffman is threatening to kill himself because he has nothing. Beatty tells him that thats whats great about him. Youre the kind of guy whod rather have nothing than settle for less. Ishtar was a financial failure because it went way over budget and was poorly marketed. It was doomed to bomb before it ever came out. But what does that matter to us, now? The fact is that this classic comedy is in league with all of your favorites, and youre only depriving yourself of a lot of good belly laughs if you dont give Ishtar a look.

This movie is not a turkey. This is not the worst movie ever made.<br><br>This movie is a classic, if a bit overbudget, comedy. This film contains subtle comedy, broad slapstick, political commentary.<br><br>Ok, maybe the desert scenes are a bit odd, but how else could you get lines like "here we are shooting at helicopters - that ain't poverty!"<br><br>Bring this out on DVD now!

All I can remember is riding home in the back seat listening to my mom sob about how much she loved Dustin and Warren, and how could they do something like this to themselves. <br> The only funny part I can remember (which is why I gave it One Star) is where the 2 chinese guys are singing America's "horse with no name." But of course that was soon ruined by Hoffman and Beatty jumping up on stage and doing what they did for the other 95% of the movie. *$#^ING. But hell, who could even try to be funny or good when you have the horrible dialog they had to work with. Sorry guys, it's not ur fault.

Ishtar was and remains one of my favorite movies. I use the reactions of others as a litmus to test how compatible we would be in the long run. If they parrot bad reviews, I know there's precious little about which we would agree. The acting and the writing are impeccable; though to hear the reviews, run-of-the-mill critics/viewers are unable to appreciate them. The good-natured fun is continual, the lyrics imaginative. Enough! with the put-downs of Elaine May, et al. They did a remarkable job. This movie never fails to cheer me up. I'll be leaving them some love in my will.

This is the greatest movie! Dustin Hoffman is great in this roll. A must see. Dustin Hoffman and Warren Bety team up as song writers who think that they are as good as Simon&amp; Garfunkel and decied to take their act on the road. They are sent to Ishtar to entertain and get mixed up with the FBI and the government as spies. It is a crazy, funny, blend of comedy that will have you rolling off your seat. A must see. <br>

When I went to see Ishtar, I had not been to a movie in years. At that time I was in my early 40's, had just left a job that was 24/7 and I was very depressed. Ishtar made me laugh and I sat through a second viewing and still laughed. I will always have fond memories of Ishtar and the way it brought me back to reality.

I honestly believe that Hoffman and Beatty tried to make a bad movie just to see if there celebrity would sell it. These guys are too smart not to know that this stunk.

Somehow Ishtar has become the trademark for a &quot;Bad&quot; movie -- like Bandaid is for bandages? For the life of me, I don't see how this came about. Is it because it made less money than it took to make? That doesn't mean anything. Did the critics actually watch the movie?<br><br>I can't count how many times I've quoted this movie and used it's great one-liners to make sense of some of what life has thrown my way...like, &quot;It takes courage to have nothing at your age.&quot; or my personal favorite, &quot;I'd rather have nothing, then settle for less.&quot;<br><br>The movie shows a very comical side to bad entertainment (i.e., the two characters portrayed in the film -- a couple of the worst singers ever.)<br><br>This movie is great fun for just kicking back, eating some popcorn and just enjoying the silly antics of two wack-o's that have no idea how bad they are.<br><br>Hoffman and Beatty prove that, &quot;Telling the truth can be dangerous business. If you don't know yourself, then you don't know why.&quot; Think about it...

People who claim this is a terrible movie just make it easier for those of us who like it to get ahold of a copy. Treat your friends to an intellectual, witty, dialogue AND plot driven film that will have you in stitches. If you're anything like me, you'll be quoting hundreds of Lyle (Beatty) and Hawk's (Hoffman) one liners in every day situations. &quot;;Oh my God, Rabbi Pierce is here!&quot;;

Ishtar is a funny funny movie! The lead actors give a great performance as bumbling musicians. The music these two create is pure comedy...&quot;;no one will hire you if you play the accordian&quot;;. The one liners are right on!!! &quot;;I would like to buy a blind camel&quot;; ha ha ha Have a brownie and sit back and laugh at this movie!!!
