The director found a way to make us viewers feel comfortably nauseated with these two scenes - everybody that I know that viewed this movie, stayed in the theatre and / or continued to watch it at their homes!! - but he also managed to tell us about choices. Decisions. Consequences. The whole purpose of the movie going backwards is to put events in perspective. What would you do if you knew what was going to happen to you? Would you have taken the under path? Would you have spent more time with your girl at the party? Would you have tried to kill the gay guy? The movie in my opinion is good. You have to watch this movie with an open mind. I know, many people were offended by the rape scene, and it seems to be longer than necessary, but it makes you - the viewer - FEEL RAPED...

Anyway, watch the movie with an open mind, otherwise, just rent something else. All the tricks have been done before- to better effect, I might add. There really is nothing surprising, shocking or even thought provoking left once you see through the film's "in your face" veil. I was really bored with this film for pretty much the entire length, it did nothing to pull me in or make me care. And the ending just made me sigh and say "it figures..." Yes, there's violence (shocking!) and sex (gasp!) but in the end who cares... Was this review helpful? I've no objection to sex and violence, and frankly, neither the sex, nor the violence offended me in this film. What is offensive about this film is simply it's utter lack of substance.. Girl gets raped.. drug using boyfriend goes crazy seeks revenge and beats on gay guys. This is the stuff of soap operas.. superficial and insulting. When I read reviews that tout it as ";darkly wonderful"; etc.. I am reminded of the childs fairytale.. the emperors new clothes.. it's tres chic to think anything bizarre and ";dark"; is BRILLIANT... It's not.. It's just simplistic, bizarre and dark. I'm sure I'll be labeled just another viewer who doesn't get ";it";.. but I fear there's nothing to get. This TRIES to be hollywood... and as unlofty a goal that is.. it falls way short. Was this review helpful? It gives you an idea that anything could happen in an everyday life. A twist in the plan for the day that could change your life and the people around you forever. It was graphic, it was intense. The icing on the cake is that you have to read the words and see them on screen. You want to look away but its hard. Its something to think about, this could happen to anyone but having a reaction as the two men in this movie is something on every mans mind. Leaving them to think would I react like that? Could I do something like that to another human? Would my anger lead me to search and kill of another man. My answer is Hell Yes! Was this review helpful? This is definitely not a film for children or the squeamish. The graphic content of the first half of the film made it a little uneasy to watch especially Bellucci's 9-minute rape scene which just seems to never end. Bellucci was superb. She deserves a lot of credit for her integrity and willingness to go along with a film of this nature. You may be shifting in your seat during the first half of the film but by the end you'll feel satisfied and definitely in a better mood than you were during the first half of the film. Bellucci had such great chemistry with real-life husband Vincent Cassell on-screen. Only off-screen couples like them could demonstrate such passion. Highly recommended. Was this review helpful? Sign In 4 out of 5 users found this helpful Posted: 2/7/2003A review of Irreversible by BloodyMilesAway A strong film which deserves a more balanced review than that which appears at the top of the page. The film has been condemned as racist - which is, frankly, laughable - especially when levelled by a reviewer who happily generalises: ";Anal rape is a particular favorite of these [modern French] filmmakers";. Other clumsy sentences include: ";a twenty-minute-or-so long rape scene"; - well, it's nine minutes long - but it needs to be that long to make the audience feel sufficiently violated. It is a deeply harrowing part of the movie - but highly effective. And the suggestion, referring to the fire-extinguisher fight, that ";People will start walking out during that scene"; is nonsense. Sure, I had to look away - but nobody at my local cinema had to leave. The film is constructed in a similar manner to Memento, true - but that doesn't make it bad. ";Poor [Monica] Bellucci is not good at picking roles"; - really? Or has she bravely taken a difficult, demanding part and played it wonderfully? Granted, the film does drag on a bit longer than necessary and its content is not for the feint-hearted - but the damning review is narrow-minded and unjust. Was this review helpful? It is incredible how all sequences were made in just one shot, and that is one of its big qualities. The story is very good, but what's even better is how the director (Gaspar Noe) put it all together. It is very cruel, very disturbing and there's a lot of violence in it, but it is all so perfectly done, not just to merely shock the audience, it is simply realistic. It is absolutely a great movie, to serve as a lesson to all the moviemakers. That is how a film should be. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-7 of 7 Per Page | ||
