I never read the book, but myself hopped a plane in 85; to Alaska at age 15 sought out my dad, who I later learned had abondoned not only me and my siblings but left another child fatherless. The price the movie parents paid for that crime made me look at the price I have made my dad pay for wanting me later and not the other child he left on his own, never recognizing him. I also am on the flip side having handed down to my child the dysfunction I have grown up with, with out intent, I felt both sides of the finely crafted sword. My 19 year old and I watched it togethe, she forgave me. cudos Sean. Was this review helpful? I rented it because I had read a revue some months ago and it struck a chord with me. When I got out of High School I was going to hitchhike across America (I graduated in 1973) but never did and I really regret not doing so. This movie was touching, well acted, great storytelling, excellant soundtrack by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and expertly directed. I'm 53 now but am seriously considering chucking the restraints of life I now have and travel this land, including Alaska. Was this review helpful? This poor kid had these romantic ideas of solitude in the wilderness. At one point he said that human relationships are over-rated, but his last words are "happiness is not real unless it is shared." Ah, too late. I think everyone can relate to his ideas of not wanting to be trapped by the love of material things, things that society tells us is important. He thinks like the author who says something like a 9 to 5 job is unthinkable torture. Go see it. It's an interesting story. Was this review helpful? The film dwells on the character's absurd connection with a bunch of over the hill hippies and a kindly old man who tries to help and connect with him. The film is long, boring and pointless; tries hard to be artsy but proves once again that Penn should stick to acting. Perhaps his affection for Hugo Chavez has further muddled his judgment. What no one has commented on is the fact that the parents were intense and controlling (a child cannot grow up in that environment without being deeply affected by it). People that don't grow up in that environment(MONEY) have no empathy for someone like Chris and just write him off as some spoiled rich-kid. Let me tell you something, I'm speaking from experience. After years in therapy I've figured it out. My parents, on the other hand will never get it. Unfortunately, Chris figured things out when it was too late for him. Was this review helpful? This boy is very cruel to his parents, obviously has some sort of a mental disorder, which is all very sad. Does this kind of behavior need to be promoted as something to which we all should aspire? I truly think not. Stop being selfish and be kind to people around you. That should be the message, not what was shown. Was this review helpful? The problem I found was that he was portrayed as someone who is "spiritual" and seeks a "higher ground" instead of a spoiled ungrateful brat that he really was. Typical of Sean Penn. On the other hand, the scenery was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 10/30/2007A review of Into the Wild by SecretLover_579 I only went to see this movie because the story of Christopher McCandless was of great interest to me. Movie adaptations of books are usually poorly done, and I expected this to be the same. I had no idea that I would be so moved by it. This telling of his life really had an impact on me. The actors and characters were very well developed, and kept my interest the whole time. The really shocking thing is that this is a true story! Chris was a naive young guy who had some difficulty reconciling some of the realities of his life. This happens a lot, but most people survive it. Anyone who pays attention to wilderness accidents knows that minor mistakes in judgement are often deadly in the wilderness.
I don't care for Sean Penn, but he did a great job telling Chris' story, and allowing me to see how much Chris affected people in his short life. I am grateful to Chris' family for sharing this story, it must have been very difficult for them. I highly recommend this movie. I can understand if some people find it slow because it is a moving drama, not an action-thriller. Was this review helpful? I loved the way it was edited and I felt the movie even brought out more of the story than the book did in some ways. The only criticism I have is I feel Penn was a little hard on the parnets. I felt the book was more compassionate to what the parents went through and the tragedy of the tremendous strain this whole event had on them. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 10/25/2007A review of Into the Wild by SexyJitterbugBaby I truly enjoyed this movie. I did not laugh, and I did not cry (already knew how it would end) , but I did reflect, and to me that is one of the true tests of a great film. I think Sean Penn, along with the author of the original book, did an admirable job piecing together the last two years of this young man's life, who, despite all his ideals and romantic philosophies, discovers just a little too late what is truly important in life. Yes, one can live well and happily with few material possessions, an adventurous spirit, and an inquisitive search for truth and meaning, but one cannot live for very long without human contact and bonding, or of course, food. That is why I don't think of Christopher McCandless, tenderly and appreciatively portrayed by Emile Hirsch, as self-righteous or arrogant or spoiled, but maybe a litttle naive. My youngest son [Harvard MD] told me this movie was worth driving a long way to see and he was right! He too had wandered the world. There really are some young people out there not afraid to challenge the materialism of this culture.. and take on the status quo, and find out for themselves what they are really made of and what is worth living for and what is not. Sensitively done, lucious scenery, creative photo angles, almost a spiritual pilgrimage to discover first hand what are the "things that are eternal." Miss that point and you miss the beauty of this movie. Well done Sean! Was this review helpful? The only ones to give it 5 stars are obvious plants. I used to trust "Regular people" that wrote these reviews. Most times it is obvious who the plants are. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
