This is a must see movie for Paul Newman fans, and if you weren't a fan of his before you will be after you watch HUD. Although Newman does portray a drunken Texas heel in the movie, the acting and story line are all excellent. I first seen this movie when I was in my teens and its been one of my favorites ever since. Newman lost a much deserved academy award that year, but his two co-stars, Douglas and Neal each one an award. The whole story is a clever, moving, classic movie. The tension between Douglas, Newman and Neal is brilliant, DeWildes acting was perfect as the teen who idolizes Hud....Watch it, you'll love it!

Although the acting is outstanding all the way around, the brilliant script is what makes ";Hud"; such a powerfully unforgettable movie. Coupled with the superb camera work, the script allows us to get the feel of small town life in Texas as if we actually had lived there. There are so many pearls of wisdom and one-liners in ";Hud"; that I enjoy watching it time and time again. ";Hud"; should be required watching for anybody even remotely considering studying directing or script writing. ";Hud"; ranks up there with ";Shane"; as the best of it's genre.

This is the most unerrated movie of all time. We need a remake. It could be a wake up call for America. Is all we care about me, me, me?! Paul Newman could star in the Melvyn Douglas role with Queen Latifa as the housekeeper. Our future is flashing before our eyes! Wake up America before it is too late. As bad as Hud is, he has our modern heros (George Bush, Bill Clinton, et al) beat by a mile. Could the worst of 1964 be the best of 2003?

I've seen this masterpiece over 10 times. However, I have fantasized that, in his younger days, James Dean could have been great in the role of Lon. Furthermore, if James Dean would have lived about a few years more, he might have been a great Hud. Who knows? One can always speculate...
