I had expected an absolutely outstanding performance from Ben Affleck-especially after reading some of the reviews-but I was not blown away by his performance. He got Reeves mannerisms down very well-Ill give him that-and he isnt a bad actor, just not nearly as incredible as they made him sound...He made me feel sorry for Reeves being typecast and a kept man-the sad story of his brief time in Hollywood-I suspect the man had far more to offer than the public ever got to see... Diane Lane-always gives a good performance and this was no exception. Adrien Brody did well with the subplot-I felt sorry for him at times... I think this movie raised more questions than in answered, and I was not satisfied with the ending... I wanted to feel more than I did-maybe that is a direct result of reading too many reviews before forming my own opinion-I dont know-but I must say this wasnt the best.

although not a big Afleck fan, i was impressed with his and the entire cast. growing up with superman and knowing how it took our generation by surprise well... anyway the movie was good solid entertainment. i like any movie about Los Angeles and this one was all it was ment to be. RIP G.R.

I saw Hollywoodland last week with two friends. I found the story line entertaining and was intrigued by the way the subject was presented. You were not given a definite answer as to whether Superman committed suicide, but rather were provided with different scenarios of what happened so you could make up your own mind. It was a little frustrating because you were no closer to the truth than before you saw the movie. I felt sorry for Mr. Reeves as he struggled unsuccessfully to free himself from the Superman character and move onto more serious acting roles. This is a movie which needs to be watched closely. You need to notice the small things, because the movie keeps bouncing between incidents that led up to the death and the investigation by Adrien Brodys character. It is extremely easy to get cofused if you are too busy asking questions of the person sitting next to you. I concentrated on the movie, so had no trouble following. My two friends, however, got very frustrated by the scenes jumping back and forth, probably because one was asking questions causing the other to miss important clues. We ended up in the parking lot afterward where I had to answer their questions. I came away very exhausted and wishing I had never gone to see the film. This movie was OK. Not one Id recommend and certainly wouldnt buy the DVD.

It was kind of off-putting the different scenarios laid out about the demise of Superman. Was the movie having any real point of view, was one put forth over the others? The acting is adequate and Diane L. is a stand out, but it is not an uplifting story so dont expect one The connivng mother, the insecure mistresses, the frustrated movie star, the notorious bosses, the grimy detective, the bratty kid. Whoa. A-plus for image making though.

Posted: 9/23/2006A review of Hollywoodland by drmaggie0
I think most reviewers missed the main point of this movie. It was not trying to solve the mystery of how superman died (which is why several plausable endings were all shown). It was showing us what makes a real super- man. It was brilliant at establishing who is the real super-man- the dad (Brody) who after he blows it with his son (a poignant and well acted scene where Brody shows up drunk at his sons school), gets back up and returns to the son to reestablish his credibility and dignity. The movie tells us about George Reeves father and how he wasnt there for George as a real not reel man. Hoskins plays the other pathetic man who kept mistresses, killed anyone is his way, and used pictures and publicity to appear to be a real man. Then Adrian Brodys character tells us about his own dads failure as a father. We watch as an increasingly desperate Reeves tries to move out from his role as a kept man (with Lane) and as a fake superhero to become a true man worthy of respect from others and himself. We watched as Reeves fails to become a true man as Brody succeeds. The home movie clip of Brody playing superman with his son at the end was so clever. Contrasting Reeves on screen as the pretend superman and Brody on screen as a real father- the real man in the movie. Real men arent fake superheroes but the men who can assume responsibility for themselves and their actions and even after mistakes make changes and contunue striving for good. This is a stretch but it reminds me of the vast difference between Judas, Peter, and Jesus. Both men betrayed Jesus but Judas took the cowards way out and commit suicide (like Reeves) while Peter (and Brodys character) repented and was restored. This movie brilliantly and subtly captured desperation of Reeves as a fake superman and redemption of Brodys character as a real man. I dont understand the symbolism of the cards found in the bedroom and then by Brody at the end of the movie on the lawn????

Congratulations to the team involved with Hollywoodland. Best Ben ever and stellar performances all around. The wonderful performances are welcome but the script and images are haunting for a Boomer like me. The design and dialogue creates the tastes of late 50s George Reeves era. There were times I felt myself gasp in recognition. The sceening of From Here to Eternity must join any Actors Nightmare scenerio!

I keep waiting for a film to be released that is worthy of the talents of Diane Lane. Hollywoodland is watchable chiefly because of the performance by Lane. The Adrian Brody character and his plotline (outside of the George Reeves connection) is the weakest element of the film. Ben Aflecks performance, while not amazing (I dont quite understand the Best Actor Award @ the Venice Film Festival), captures the essence of George Reeves very well. The picture looks great (costumes, set design, cinematography), but ultimately the fictionalization of what really happened is at best irritating... and certainly unenlightening.

This movie was very slow moving and did not tell a very good story about the life of George Reeves. There was no depth of characters here only superficial mimicking of the 50s, an era in which I was a child glued to the T.V watching Superman. ALmost dozed off .

Told with great 50s style and dead-on characterizations, Hollywoodland reveals the day to day vibe that still permeats L.A.to this day. The people creating the illusion of the glamour surrounding the movie business are its biggest victims, and nothing is ever enough. (Today -thats entertainment!) That such a grim scenario can spawn so many heartful fantasies is truly amazing -it must be wishful thinking. As a kid back in the 50s, Superman was even bigger than I Love Lucy to me. To find that Reeves didnt appreciate the impact he was having on a whole generation of kids is amazing, and unsettling. Still, its a credit to Ben Affleck that the subject comes off as sympathetic, if not syncophantic. Diane Lane gets her best role in years and plays it with classic Hollywood style, befitting a studio wife of the 50s, but moreso befitting a classic American actress. The deft writing and steady direction can be creditied for a lot of the depth in the performances. Brody s great, but mainly for the way his character reflects the everyman version of the gap between image and reality that the mystery of Reeves death presents. At the time, I thought it could have been 20 minutes shorter, but even 20 minuters more wouldnt have given a clue to the nay-sayers in this review column, who obviously didnt get it. Right up there with LA Confidential and Chinatown.

in the first place reeves never lived in hollywoodland they had to change the original title truth justice and the american way due to legal copy rights from warner bros slogan well get this its an adrian brody vehicle not ben affleck hes just a supporting cast he should only be nominated for best supporting actor mr brody best leading actor u see mr affleck should have been dawning a auburn wig instead of black the color of georges hair his ex fiance was a blond the actress playing her is black so on the costume dept it wasnt totally accurate lets say like in notorious betty page but its still good worth seeing but its because of adrian brody not ben affleck hes ben worthy of a best supoporting actor cause hes no lead adrian is convincing as the desperate detective in 1959 i was 3 living in texarcana texas watching super man repeats im a george reeves fan mike james mcdonald of mad tv fame would of been more appropriate than mr affleck in playing george it would of helped his act ing career but he doesnt kiss butt like the other actor does thats how tough this biz is if reeves didnt commit suicide he coudl have gone into directing nudie cuities and if by living still in 70 xxx porn director

Though I am not an Affleck fan, I enjoyed his portrayal of George Reeves. It is not very often that every actor in a movie plays the part with excellence. I did not find one part of this movie or acting role that I did not enjoy. A must see. I will see it again... The detective played this role with Oscar intensity...

I will have to say this had to be one of the worse movies I have ever seen - so boring - I kept waiting for something to happen - it never did! It was just another nothing movie - a waste of time - I should know better then to believe the critics review! Storyline was totally void of a story, movie completely chopped up moving back and forth, hard to follow - pretty much just crap - do not waste your money on this one!

Apparently I am in the moniority here but I came away from this movie thinking, Gee, I wish I had waited for it to come out on DVD. Well acted for the most part but certainly NOT worthy of the 4 stars the reviewer gave but then to each his own right?
