The story arc of the movie is different than the comics, but Mike Mignola is a contributor to the movie, so if he's okay with it, than so am I. You can tell del Toro loves this story. There are CG effects, but there are also old school makeup and costumes. Ron Perlman can be so funny one moment and then break your heart the next. Can't wait for HB 3, hope there is one. When Hellboy, Abe, and German gasman enter the underground troll market...it reminded me a lot like Harry Potter when Harry and Hagrid enter the wizard town in the first film (never read any books, so I dont know what exactly it's called). There were moments that made this movie into an action comedy. The villan was too cliche'd and could have been used to his full potential. A good movie overall, just a little unoriginal. Even though Hellboy saved the day, he couldn't do it without regretting to have to do what was necessary. PUKE!! It's fine movie making and a complex script that will leave some behind. If you like comics and scifi then you'll love this movie. It begins with a pre-teen hellboy going through an awkwardly cheesy dialogue with his "father" who tells him an even more awkwardly cheesy story about the history of the world with and EVEN MORE AWKWARDLY CHEESY animation to go with the story. The movie doesn't really ever pick up, even when you finally get to see the undefeatable "golden army." The story was horrible and the writers should be ashamed of themselves. It was overboard cheeseball and made me anxious for this movie to be over with. From beginning to end this movie was a waste of time and money, and I would recommend never seeing it...even if it's for free... Was this review helpful? I have to say I enjoyed it. Yes there are more than subtle nods to Men in Black, X Men & even Star Wars, & the message that came with the Forest God scene was a bit much, but I thought it was a very good movie. So if you dont want to stand in long lines waiting to get into The Dark Knight, see Hellboy 2 for now & see TDK in a couple weeks. Was this review helpful? The first installment of Hellboy was terrible, and they added a love story to this one which makes it even worse. The graphics were pretty cool. The action scenes were covered in the preview. all in all we (everyone I visted this film with) agreed this was a complete disappointment and wouldnt waste the 4 dollars to rent it on DVD. There was way too much cornball and too much yackity yack. The first hellboy was much better than this one. My girlfriend was more excited to see this one than me, and she gave it 1 star.
