I think the critics that rated this movie lack the knowledge that is inbetween the lines. I think the critics' general knowledge does not cover or understand WHAT Hannibal is....not just a cannibal. I think Hannibal is an off-shoot of Kristeva's (Murder in Byzantium) theories, abjection.
I highly suggest this movie to all fans of Hannibal, it is not pointless and I think the critics need to understand the basis of the movie before making an uneducated 'slam' on the movie and book.
Because I believe that Hannibal is an example of abjection and not very many people understand it, the book and movie weren't as big a hit as it should have been. This movie really adds to Hannibal! new comer was terrific...having watched the 2 previous movies i never thought i would understand how someone could become Hanabal...now i do...i actually felt sorry for him....being put in the posiition he was in...under those circumstances.....knowing how the relationship between him and the detective started was great.....it was a love hate relationship...i hope to see this new comer again....his acting was so good and was scary....it makes you wonder the deep down emotions that actors reflect in movies Was this review helpful? Most of the reviewers who were really psyched for lots of blood and gore seem to be dancing a thin line towards illiteracy. The poeple who rate this highest are those who appreciate Hannibal Rising as more psychological than sensational. For those who call this a sequel, it(like Red Dragon) is a PREQUEL. I spent a dark and jumpy night in my bathtub in 1984 when I could not put down Red Dragon, still one of my scariest books ever(along with The Exorcist. Helter Skelter, GWBs autobiography-coloring book). Dont expect too much from this movie Its not great. It has no Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, or even William Petersen(Will in Manhunter). The book is just adequate, but far better than Hannibal. Just go and enjoy the movie, possibly with some fava beans a nice chianti. And if you have friends over for dinner, I hope they show the good taste you appreciate.... Was this review helpful? it tells and shows you why he is the way he is, i mean he went through hell and no wonder he was a monster he had good reason to.
but if you seen all the hannibal movies, you have to see this one to know why he is the way he is. The movie is kinda graphic, but not as graphic as the previous movies. he is truly a bad ass.
so its def worth going to see or worth renting when it comes out. not worth buying .

It was on the long side, I admit and the ending was a bit of a let down, but still the way people talk about it it sounds like they are just playing it down because theyre compairing it to the Silence Of The Lambs. And well, of course its being compaired to the Silence Of The Lambs, thats not that much of a surprise. But if you went into Hannibal Rising expecting it to be better then the Anthony Hopkins flicks then that was just a stupid and naive thing to think. Of course it wouldnt be as good. I loved Silence of the Lambs and then Red Dragon let me down. Now comes Hannibal Rising. I believe that every aspect of a movie should be covered the first time around as to avoid the need for further explanation in a sequel. I went in and I sat there for like an hour and thirty minutes thinking, when the hell is it going to get scary? Hey! Guess what! It never did. It was low gore, and low on scary, however, it was sad. I liked that it had a plot, and it continued to make sence throughout the movie. But when you go to see a horror movie, you should get to see one. This was more action and adventure than horror. When it did get somewhat bloody, it never lasted long, or it never got that bad. People going to see hannibal are expecting that, and they leave without fullfilling their hopes. Overall, I guess if you like horror movies, with not too much gore, this is for you. If you love gore and major horror, this isnt. Was this review helpful? I was intrigued throughout the entire film. Its not too long and not too short and we now understand why Hannibal is the way he turned out to be.
