Date ![]() Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Dead Again, Much Ado About Nothing, Mary Shelleys Frankenstein) multi-tasks yet again (as star, director and screenwriter only, this time David Barron produced) in a revisionist, all-star reworking of the classic tragedy Of a man who could not make up his mind written by William Shakespeare in 1600 and made into what is by many considered the definitive film version by Sir Laurence Olivier in 1948. The dream cast includes screen legends Academy Award winner Sir John Gielgud, Sir John Mills, Academy Award winner Dame Judy Dench, Academy Award winner Sir Richard Attenborough, Academy Award winner Charlton Heston, Academy Award winner Jack Lemmon, Julie Christie, Derek Jacobi, Academy Award nominee Kate Winslet (who would go on to noteriety in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic), Robin Williams, Brian Blessed and Billy Crystal. Not only did Kenneth Branagh incorporate a dream cast to star in this 4 hour epic production, he also shot the film in 70 millimeter format, the same process which the legendary William Wyler used to film the colossal Academy Award winning epic Ben-Hur. As usual, Branagh delivered a tour-de-force performance, taking some aspects of Sir Laurence Oliviers portrayal and subtly making them his own. Can not wait for the 10th Anniversary Special Commemorative Edition DVD due out next year. Recommended to watch alongside Sir Laurence Oliviers classic (and arguably, the best) interpretation of the play. Zeffirellis is worth renting. Though it WAS still faithful to Shakespeares work, the play was badly edited when the screenwriter adapted it for the film version. Gutsy move by Branagh to film the play (wish me luck, as Im taking the same approach with another of the immortal Bards plays). Rated PG for some violence. Was this review helpful?
