At times it was a bit disturbing, but Ryan Goslings suberb acting in this movie makes it worth watching. The scene in the girls locker room is particularly spellbinding. It serve as a premise for the whole movie, and Ryan does not disappoint. The ending leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but ambiguity is what the film is aiming for. This is a great movie, definetly worth watching. Was this review helpful? Epps gives a strong performance and the emotional restraint in their interactions is powerful. The character of Frank also lends subtle force to the shaping of events. The urban stereotypes of Dreys mother and brother were unnecessary additions to the cast. At our best, we should inspire, and if we are slipping into such a horrific direction that we cant keep it together around our students, we have no business being IN the business! I kept hoping against all odds that someone would rise above, that ethics would take control, that someone would get some help or a little divine intervention...but instead, it just lumbered along to what appears to be nowhere for all. Equal opportunity, I guess? I was angry and disappointed. Was this review helpful? I thought it would never end. A total failure, it should be labled Made in China. Was this review helpful? i think that Goslings biggest hit so far was a glossy, mawkish 2004 soap opera, The Notebook, that turned off fans of his more daring work and hinted that hed gone Hollywood. Fortunately, hes followed it up with Ryan Flecks Half Nelson, an excellent low-budget drama that puts him in a good position to earn a best-actor Oscar nomination. Its his strongest performance and his best-written role to date.
the movie offers an opportunity to marvel, once again, at the dazzling talent of Ryan Gosling for playing young men as believable as they are psychologically trip-wired. Ryan Gosling excels at playing contradictory characters like this one, having kick-started his career as a Jewish neo-( in The Believer, but here, his inner turmoil rarely gets vocalized. Its a remarkably oscar performance for his work. What makes Half Nelson both an unusual and an exceptional American film, particularly at a time when even films about Sept. 11 are professed to have no politics, is its insistence on political consciousness as a moral imperative. A compelling drama that establishes Ryan Gosling as one of the finest actors of his generation. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-6 of 6 Per Page | ||
