Martin Scorsese directs with vigor and truth. It has the natural violence that occurs and it is not pretty.
Scorses always elicits the best performances out of his actors.

Based on a true story it chronicles the rise and fall of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and everyone around him. Probably Scorseses best movie which is saying a lot -- and still no Oscars. Is that a joke or what? (Hes only made among others Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, all of which are landmark films among the best of all time) On top of that it has the best soundtrack in film history...my personal favorite is the use of Donovans Atlantis in the Billy Batts scene. That being said you still cannot compare it to The Godfather which is probably the best movie ever made!!! Was this review helpful? Goodfellas adapted from the book 'Wiseguys'is an excellent portrayal of the mafia's way of life during the 60's 70's and 80's. Henry, a half irish, Italian growing up in America comes across the conceited crooket ways of the Mafia when he meets the respected Paulie. Henry climbs his way up the ladder and soon becomes not only a mafia hit man but also very wealthy. His dealings with jimmy (de niro) and Tommy (Pesci) is worth watching over and over again.<br> A masterpiece once again by Scorsese, one of my favourite films of all time<br><br> Was this review helpful? This stunning film is obviously one of the best mob pictures in a long time and for a long time to come. The performances are riveting as is the plot, which is based on a true story. I decidedv that since he's good with movies, I'd rent it...and I did. This movie blew away all my expectations. It has to be one of the best mafia movies EVER, and you've gotta love the cast..I mean, who could go wrong with PESCI, LIOTTA, and DENIRO!?I certainly can't.This movie has great writing, great acting, as well as an all star cast.BUY IT! Ray Liotta is just superb, the role seems to have been made for him. Pesci is great too demonstrating that you don't have to be a big guy to be threatening. De Niro portrays his role in a very understated way, and I personally felt like he could have injected a little more energy and craziness into it, bearing in mind the development of his character towards the end. I agree with the earlier review that the scene where Liotta takes his date into the restaurant is one of the best you will ever see. Was this review helpful?
