The opening images of a salute to Ed Murrow convey a sense of weight that becomes central to the idea of the 50s everything we see, the people, the furniture, even the martini glasses, seem grounded, possessed of a solidity that speaks of a time where wood was wood, steel was steel, journalists were heroes, and everyone smoked.
I say everyone smoked, and you read it, but until you see the film, you wont understand it. Cigarettes blaze in every hand in nearly every shot. Everything that happens, every decision that is made, comes at us through a haze of cigarette smoke. This further sets the film apart from us, removes effectively it to the America of 50 years ago.
In the end, the film left me with no feeling of triumph or remorse. I appreciated the lessons the time had for our modern age, but these were no great revelation. In the end tis picture is a wonderfully crafted, beautifully shot, superbly acted time capsule. It is itself an opulent civics lesson. Everyone should see it, but while you will be engaged, you may not be entertained. While you may learn some facts, the film delivers little real understanding. That distant world is in the end too far removed from our own. Was this review helpful? it is set in the early 1950s, the threat of Communism created an air in the United States and exploiting those fears was Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. However, CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow and his producer Fred W. Friendly decided to take a stand and challenge McCarthy and expose him for the fear monger he was. However, their actions took a great personal toll on both men, but they stood by their convictions and helped to bring down one of the most controversial senators in American history.
Good Night and Good Luck is filmed black and white, I am not a fan of the black and white movies but Good Night and Good Luck is an exception. I liked that is was shot in black and white, it fit the movies very well. It made it seems as if is was in the 1950s.
George Clooney wrote , directed and co- stared in Good Night and Good Luck. George Clooney also directed Unscripted and the hit Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. George Clooney is a great actor and a great director, but this is my least favorite movie of his.
Good Night and Good Luck has strong performances by big stars but it was a little hard to fallow and a little mis leading. I think if you were alive during this time period you will understand and respect this movie more. I was not alive during this time period, so for me Good Night and Good Luck was not as clear.
I wanted to like this movie but I just could not at times I found it was a little boring. Good Night and Good Luck was up for 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. The Direction was good the Acting was great but the movie was not so good. It was a big disappointment. Was this review helpful? The acting, directing, story and the black and white was so good. For the people who say this is left-wing propaganda, WHAT DO YOU THINK FOX NEWS NETWORK DOES??????? That is propaganda too. The left is not the only one that has propaganda. This movie was awesome because it showed a historical period. A time when people could not have different views because they were being called unpatriotic. SOUND FAMILIAR???? For the person who said that George Clooney does not deserve to be American, that is mudslinging. You dont have to be conservative to love this country and be American. But anyway, SEE THIS MOVIE!!!! It is really good. It is not too long either. It gets to the point and then it ends. More movies should be like this. They make you think and discuss current events. Finally, this year we had smart movies. Was this review helpful? Sign In 5 out of 7 users found this helpful Posted: 2/23/2006A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by Ashlay6 Excellent film. Thats it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 12 out of 14 users found this helpful Posted: 2/21/2006A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by Sydneyman This is the best film I have seen in quite a while. It is, as far as I can tell, authentic to the story and the time and raises two very important issues.
The first is the decline of television in the intervening years. The decline of truth, depth and intelligence is apparent with the rise in popularity of so called reality shows, which are anything but, such as Survivor and Big Brother. Here in Australia the only fearless channels are the two government funded but not controlled stations ABC and SBS which take on the hard issues and are not syncophants to big business or whoever is in power. The other three networks move ever more downmarket in an attempt to gain the largest audience to please their shareholders and vested interest. I think in the US you have a very similar situation and only PBS is a beacon of the values that Murrow stood for. Dont even start to talk about Fox News, which we unfortunately receive here on pay television, which is the mouthpiece of the Republican Party. See the documentary OUTFOXED if you doubt it.
The other and more substantial point made in the film is that when news is sanitised to please advertisers and the powerful the people are denied the right to make their own judgement. They are being manipulated and lied to for political and commercial purposes. Remember that during the McCarthy era Arthur Miller wrote the powerful play The Crucible about the Salem witch-hunts and trials. It was an analogy for what was happening in his own time and a warning. Goodnight and Goodluck is a powerful analogy to what is happening in the US today where the BushCheneyRumsfeld cabal are lying to the the people, tearing up the Bill of Rights e.g. The Patriot Act (have you read it?), detention without habeas corpus and a new fear a day.
The world does not hate Americans, it hates this dangerous, lying (WMDs??) regime. Was this review helpful? But the message still is loud and clear. I have never seen a movie that portrays a more stark view of the world as it was ... and, alas, might be again.
It is ironic that the movie was made in black and white -- for that is the way Joe McCarthy tried to paint the world. And that is the way many would like to paint it now -- either you are for the current government or against it.
The message of the movie is simple -- a truly free society can question its leaders. That doesnt mean it wont respect them -- it just means they are allowed to express reservations.
It is stunning how well David Straitharn morphed into Murrow. It is even more stunning how hard it turned out to be to ask fairly simple questions. And that is the irony -- everything in the movie is 100 per cent accurate.
This movie should be a must see on two fronts
1) It is an accurate portrayal of the era
2) It asks questions that need to be asked. Was this review helpful? Sign In 8 out of 43 users found this helpful Posted: 2/7/2006A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by JIMSBABYBLUES92009 There are so many kool aid drinkers in this world. If you bought into this bias

Sign In 14 out of 25 users found this helpful Posted: 1/23/2006A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by WWERULZ011 Honestly this is the best film from George Clooney as an all round star in Hollywood. The films ingenious plot is trying to tell us that the stark contrast of censorship and all out Politically correct BS and manipulation through the medium of television is so relevant to the ideals of today.
How ironic that no matter how much you try to surpress those want to speak out against every outrage and PC motivated garbage through spin doctors
The Bush Cheney administration is totally doing the same thing that Senator McCarthy did back in the 1950s by scaremongering every day people who just to want to know the real truth.
What Im about to type may outrage some readers PLEASE dont be afraid to speak up if you agree with me I DO NOT sympathise or condone the dickheads that were responsible for the 9.11.2001 terrorist attacks on America, but I do see it as sumwhat of an Irony why America once paid the worlds most wanted man millions of dollars in favours to fight the Russians in Afghanistan during the 1980s and Funding former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein the money and weapons during the Iran Iraq war throughout the 1980s
Back to the point, The films moral story is saying that everyone is not what they are and two faced Hypocrites when Money is factored into every decision.
Michael Moore is the Modern day Edward R Murrow who wishes to spread the truth amongst the web of PC spin doctor created BS
Good Night and Good Luck is awesome Was this review helpful? Sign In 16 out of 21 users found this helpful Posted: 1/3/2006A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by debkakes0 I disagree 100 percent with the reviewer who said this movie wont mean much to you unless you lived during the McCarthy years. Indeed, that someone could think that reinforces the message of the movie. We have been spoonfed our opinions by those in power, delivered by a medium (television) that invites no interaction and no intellectual engagement. That we have become so pacified by this medium is obvious by that comment. Much of what was going on then is going on NOW! Only instead of Communists and Pinkos being vilified, it is those who oppose Operation Bush-Cheney in Iraq, environmental activists, and a long list of others. The subject being tackled here goes far, far beyond the historical context of the 1950s. It is an intelligent, important, and timely film, and highly recommended for anyone who cares about what is to become of this country and to the minds of our children. Was this review helpful? Sign In 6 out of 12 users found this helpful Posted: 12/10/2005A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by charles12559 This movie does not mean very much unless you were around at the time of McCarthyism. It pointed out that the press is a mitigating factor in measuring the events that reflect the times. It was well done and should have been black and white because during this period a resurgence of Salem type witch-hunting was prevailing across America and the atmosphere was indeed colorless.
This picture illustrated that thanks to a few courageous reporters, the stigma associated with any past links to the Communist party that spelled ruination to so many lives, was finally put to rest. Even today we all owe a great deal of gratitude toward men like Edward R. Murrow, Fred Friendly and others who defeated McCarthy at his sadistic game of character assasination and showed this country that the Senator was no more than an alcoholic demagogue who did not even have the character to base his accusations on facts.
To this viewer the movie took me back to the 50s and all that went with those terrible times. Was this review helpful? It would have been much better in color! I see in color. So black and white is what? Nothing but sensory depravation a missing dimension... Was this review helpful? People who are not used to a good film in black and white will not this film but if you want to know more about our history go watch this movie. Much of the movie is confusing to the younger people (such as myself) but I can say that I can not wait to talk about this in History one day. Being a 16 year old watching this film tought me a lot about the CBS programing and much, much more. Go watch this its worth it! Good luck... Was this review helpful? Sign In 21 out of 27 users found this helpful Posted: 11/15/2005A review of Good Night, and Good Luck. by DRF3 Something that is often missed in the discussion of Joseph McCarthy is that under the guise of fighting against communism and communist sympathizers, his targets for destruction were most often people who were better looking, more creative, better writers and more successful than he was himself. Joseph McCarthy fits perfectly into what Fredrick Nietzsche had in mind when he wrote those rather scathing aphorisms about the envious rabble. McCarthy was himself an alcoholic with self-destructive tendencies who was small, petty, ugly, uncreative, unsuccessful, spiteful and filled with resentment and hatred against the very people who were his opposite.
Good Night and Good Luck is not ultimately about McCarthyism. The movie is about television. Good Night and Good Luck asks whether television should be merely an instrument for entertainment or should television be an instrument for serious journalism, reporting news and shaping public opinion. If television is only an instrument for entertainment and left to market pressures (maximization of profit) it produces shows like Fox News and caricatures like Al Bundy, Bill OReilly and Homer Simpson. Good Night and Good Luck does not answer the question but merely asks it, suggesting that television could be so much more than it was then and is now. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
