The acting was outstanding as well as the detailed atruistic history. The 5 star cast could not have been better for this film and it showed in there ability as professionals. The film is long but necessary to preserve details as the Civil War unfolds. The Civil War in itself was complicated to understand, and this film helped bring the events to light as to the why's and why nots thus, helping younger people to get a grasp as to what was happening during the 1860s. Critics perhaps are not fair in its evaluation since it is a prolonged abstract and not of interest to the common critic. That's a shame because this was a very well performed and entertaining film with stellar actors from Hollywood's elite professionals. The critics in my view would rather view Homer Simpson's history than a true adaptation of the Civil War. that's my 2 cents. Was this review helpful? That's surely not the problem. But there is so much information that it's hard to keep up with. They give you so many names of people, places, and ranks that you would have to be a mental genius to remember everything off the top of your head. It's grueling almost-four hours can make make you want to take a nap, and you end up wondering after about 2 and a 1/2 hours if the movie will actually ever end. Especially since the Civil War is usually thought of as the bloodiest war ever, comparing it using the population that it killed. It was even more people-and bloodier-than WWII, and I just didn't see that in this movie.I may not be a historian or study warfare, but I know that this movie depicted the battles as people getting killed, but they don't seem to have the same impact as the battles really were. I do somewhat understand why it isn't as gory as the real battle, though. They wanted to make it so where the movie was centered more on the characters (the generals mainly, which kind of makes sense because of the title) and their responses and reactions to the war and people around them rather than the war itself. But still, couldn't it be a little more realistic? This is a historic event, and if you're going to make a war movie, hit the books first! Was this review helpful? In my opinion it is up there with Pearl Harbour. The portrayal of the Civil War was fantastic, you could tell the actors were really into it. The war scenes were realistic too, not like some movies today with all those bombs and men coming out of them alive. At some points I even cried! Was this review helpful? I commend Mr Ted Turner . Job well done . You could tell from the director to the actors to the civil war renactors their heart was into making this movie a true living history , to tell the story, in a way it should have been told .
thank you Was this review helpful? Too many long poetic soliloquies and drawn out scenes of syrupy blissful interpersonal relations. So much that some of the scenes are trite and unbelievable. It could use some good editing.

This movie claims to be about the heroic leaders of both sides, but obvioulsy favors the Confederates. It is NOT a balanced look at both sides. This truly defines what motion pictures should be. This takes cinema back to the glory days where this type of movie would've been revered and respected not torn apart as revisionism. Stephen Lang is truly magnificent. Nothing can be said against him as his portrayal is Oscar quality. It will truly be a crime if he goes unawknowledged. This film portrays the human side of war, not the brutal side. This film was designed to show the trials faced by the soldiers not the carnage of blood and guts. It uses tasteful discretion, something Hollywood needs to learn about. This is a must-see for all. Was this review helpful? This war was the pivotal point in this country that formed the nation that we are today. . .united. Many men died for what they believed. There were no real winners of that war, just many lessons that have spanned generations. Was this review helpful? Most people left before the ending and when at the end it was posted on the screen that it was the first of a trilogy, a guy in the back wailed - No not again. This summed it up. Save your money and time and forget this horrible, boring film. The acting is better at your high school or community theater. The actors were stiff, the beards were so fake and I fell asleep in part of it. I can't remember going to such a bad film. If I could give it a -10, I would. Was this review helpful? I enjoyed every last minute of the movie, and I will definitely go see it again! It is the first movie ever made about the Civil War that has presented a more honest and truthful story, especially for the Confederacy's point of view. Every movie previously made has always condemned the South, referring to the noble soldiers as ";rebels";. I'm glad to finally see a more respectable representation of the Civil War. I highly recommend this movie for everyone of all ages to go see it!!! Was this review helpful? I AM GOING AGIAN TO SEE IT,MAYBE MORE.THE CAMERAS SEEM TO PICK UP ALOT OF DETAIL.YOU NEED TO HAVE A TRUE INTEREST IN THE CIVIL WAR WHEN YOU SEE IT. IT TELLS THE STORY OF OUR HISTORY. The movie is more about fact, and I like that. I recommend this movie to anyone who is slightly interested in the history of our country. However you may want to do some research of your own so that while you are watching ";Gods and Generals"; you wont be saying ";Whats that mean?"; Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
