With a lead like S.L.J., I thought it might be good, but the acting was atrocious, and the plot was extremely superficial and boring.
On the DVD jacket, someone had written a comment about the movie keeping you on the edge of your seat. Indeed, I was on the edge of my seat getting up, wandering around, taking out the garbage, and checking back to see if the nighmare was finally over.
No matter what kind of a coupon you have, dont bother spending a cent on Freedomland. In fact, keep yourself Free from it permenantly! Was this review helpful? The production was heavily bandaged with the cast of experienced actors whom were attempting to carry the weight of a boring introduction until the climax could begin. This crime drama had a thick undertone of the tabooed social ailment of racial profiling and stereotypes. The film attempted to illustrate the negative impact of racial, social and economical misconceptions which was intertwined with a crime of a missing boy.
Julianne Moore was the protagonist, Brenda Martin, whom was the traumatized, assaulted, white, female victim of an alleged, after dark carjacking in the low income housing project. Cody Martin was still in the vehicle asleep during the alleged incident, which was the catalyst for a racial clash between neighboring communities. Lorenzo Council, played by Samuel Jackson, was the assigned detective solicited by a local activist group that searches for missing children. The activist leader Karen Colluci, portrayed by Edie Falco, used a common bound of a post-traumatic mother on a personal crusade to exploit the truth that Brenda had actually buried her son after an accidental overdose of an over the counter medication, and blamed a non-existing black man. This deceit was to conceal her affairs with her girlfriends husband, a black man from the housing project.
Freedomland was the name of a condemned school for the hopeless and dysfunctional juveniles of the low income Dempsey housing projects. The graffiti tagged dilapidated building actually received about one minute of fame. The director Joe Roth echoed the misconceptions that generate racial prejudices and ones place within society.
I became disinterested with Freedomland, due to the confusion that increased with the storylines tempo. There was too much competition for attention between the analyzing of the crime and the broadcasting of racial issues. The perplexity of this film made it difficult to follow. I was very dissapointed with this movie. I usaully dont go by what the critics say (they didnt like it either), but in this case, they were right. Was this review helpful? script. Moore gave a decent performance, yet there were awkward moments
for her in this movie. Jackson gave his normal good performance but was held back by poor editing and so-so script. Rent it. Dont waste the money for

I liked the movie, the people that didnt like it would be people the same people that dont realize that situations arent handled in very different ways from one community to the next, and that some communities are treated with less respect and compassion then other communities.
