And just the fact that it is a true story, and it deals with writing, was the reason I wanted to see this. I still love writing, even though I have been out of school for four years. And, I noticed that the people who hated this movie, did not use proper grammar when they gave their perspective of this awesome movie. The reason I give this movie the five stars I am giving it, is because I really do love this movie, and because it is also about my favorite past time, writing. And, I really cried when that one guy was reading his composition when they had that party in their class. So, in conclusion, to all the uneducated, who hated this movie, please grow up already and stay in school. Good day to all of you uneducated losers. Was this review helpful? He needed to quickly figure out how to navigate the school grounds both interior and exterior to minimize unwanted run ins with certain factions. He had friends from every walk of life and race. We did run into department heads and counselors who pigeoned holed and there was very little to be done to change their minds. This was an excelllent portrayal of a cameo of existance for a certain group of kids who have never been exposed to any other way of living or thinking. We new kids who had NEVER been outside of Long Beach and are fearful of venturing out. Hollywood did get it right. If you have the money, even in Long Beach, you can insulate yourself from anything. That mother who intends to send her elementary child to Wilson will, no doubt, have him attend the separate academy located in a separate building on the campus. They even wear uniforms. Now why would this school need to go to these measures if they hadnt already given up on a certain aspect of the school population? Was this review helpful? My husband was a teacher, my son just started being a high school counselor, and my daughter is in the teacher credential program to be a teacher. I am going to ask them to run to see this movie. Very powerful, well done by all the cast. I felt their pain, and was hoping they would find hope, which they so deserved.
A must see! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/17/2007A review of Freedom Writers by rxoxnxrxoxn Okay first off, I see someone was saying this movie was a poor portrayal of Long Beach and Wilson HS. This movie is about a certain group of kids who had it rough! How can it be a bad portrayal if its based on actual true events and taken from actual documentation of those kids! I think this movie is one of the best movies Ive seen! It made me laugh, shed a tear or two and left me feeling great! I dont see how anyone could not like this movie! Dangerous Minds, Sunset Park - none of those movies have anything on this one! Freedom Writers was simply great, nothing short of amazing! Was this review helpful? I loved it. Well done and shows what prejudices and poverty can do to the young people and compassion of one person can heal the wounds. I highly recommend Freedom Writers. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/17/2007A review of Freedom Writers by Anonymous It is so sad that Long Beach and Wilson HS are being portrayed in such a negative light in this movie. First of all, Wison H.S. is 33.2 White, 36.4 Hispanic, and 15.4 African American. Wilson was just named in the May 2006 issue of Newsweek as being in the top 5 percent of all high schools (academically) in America. Other high schools would LOVE to be on that list. My son who now attends elementary school in Long Beach, where the enrollment is 79.2 white (I am not white, by the way) will be attending Wilson one day, as well as many other children who come from very respectable families. Those are NOT the statitistics of an inner-city school. There are definitely some very bad parts of LB, however the city is HUGE, just like any major city and is divided into many different neighborhoods. The area where I live is an upscale area to say the least, with the average home costing no less than 700,000 for a small 2 bedroom! Long Beach is beautiful, diverse, full of culture and all you have to do is a Google search to see the truth about this great and unique city. Long Beach is made up of every race under the sun, and everyone lives side by side and with open minds and open hearts. By the way, even in the so-called ghetto, the average home will run you at least 400,000 for a fixer upper. Most Americans who live in homes that cost 400,000 are considered very middle class and not at the poverty level as the movie portrays. GET IT STRAIGHT HOLLYWOOD!!! FYI this system would not allow me to use percentage and money signs in case you were thinking I didnt know they were needed. Was this review helpful? I got up and moved into the main hall and chose Freedom Writers as a final pick for the rest of the afternoon. The film was well casted and showed what a teacher can do for a gang oriented school that is in a rut. The teacher pulls all the strings of the students only to get them more interested in a life and to inspire them. The other teachers only played the system for what it had, rather than buck the system to give them (the students) something to dream about. Excellent movie.. Was this review helpful? For Freedom Writers is overrated, boring, and just plan ripoff. If it was possible, I would give this move a -5 stars. Just 100 load of crap. I had to wake my girlfriend and other guest after the movie was over. Run, dont walk away from this nightmare. Was this review helpful? It has the prerequisite true story background, the racial and economic tensions with some twists, and several blood-soaked children (cause thats what they are, even if theyre gang members). While some of the characters were a bit one-dimensional, like the obstructionist department head, for the most part it was truly believable and real with well-acted roles.
I graduated high school the same year in which the movie begins. The fantastic soundtrack took me back to what things were like in the world at that time, and it wasnt pretty (there was an race-based riot at my high school in 1994 12 police cars were required to quell it). My 8-year-old daughter saw the movie with me, and at one point she leaned over to me and said in a loud whisper, Its a good thing thats not how things are anymore, mommy. It was a great teachable moment, because our districts high school is much like the one in the movie.
The bottom line is that this was a great movie. The theater where I saw it was packed with viewers of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds. I wasnt the only one crying. When the movie was over, applause erupted.

What a great movie. I was thouroghly satisfied and felt a closeness with the plight of the characters. I would HIGHLY recommend it. Sure it is a liberal view of a intercity school problem, but it does show how someone very committed to make change, can do so.
See it. Was this review helpful? As im reading, im like stunned that all these people are talking about racism and how the blacks and hispanic are not treated right and what not - to me we are all the same - it doesnt matter where we go - someone will always want to make this world a bad place. There are two kinds of people, good and bad - there is no middle - you choose who you want to be - if you want to be racist - and live yourself surrounded by hate then by all means do it - but you dont need to talk all this non sense about how this movie sold because of a white actor playing the part - it doesnt matter to most of us - you obviously have issues and that is why it portrays thru your writing - no matter what we are all human - if you were blind you wouldnt even know the difference - babies dont know the difference - We need to be more like children and stop trying to ruin life for everyone else - P.S. PEACE P Was this review helpful? These teens all had personal issues they had to over come in order for them to unite. I thought it was very moving and very true, not so much on the race part right now where i stay but the violence in the world today is becoming ridiculous and for what a name or a color. This movie was hella fiyah and i recommend it to all people who havent seen it, it has a beautiful story line and keeps you interested at all times. But most of all it talks about issues through out the world today! and with that i give it 25 STARS Was this review helpful?
