Wow! This film is amazing; Jean Reno(Godzilla), Henderson and the cast make this a knockout in war movies. When an American soldier crosses over to fight with the French squadron,He gives his heart to protect his new "brothers" in World War. The viewer sees how devastating and harsh war can get.I really was amazed at the comradery and faith the soldiers had. What turned out to be prejudice, for an african american, gave another soldier a "change of heart".It was interesting, what war does to a person. I say super and Bravo!

Awesome, lots of heart. Both my husband and I loved it. Professional critics are wrong, and James Franco is wonderful as well as heroic.

I just finished watching the DVD of this movie, and let me say this. This movie is completely awesome. And if you ask me, I think this movie is exactly like Pearl Harbor. I thought the greatest part of all about this movie was putting Martin Henderson in it. But honestly, I think that if anyone gets bored while watching this movie, just would not understand the love story of being free while up in the air like that. But, I just want to own a copy of this movie now, because it really is that great of a movie. I will probably buy a copy while I am out of town tomorrow. And so, I need to get some sleep before I can do all of these things. Peace easy, movie fans.

Dont look for too much realism. The CG effects are OK, but not accurate - airplanes turn on a dime. At least they matched the control movements with the action of the plane. The whole love angle could be done away with. Its useless to the story, takes up 45 minutes of time, and the hero loses the girl (literally) in the end. Worth seeing at the dollar movies.

I intended to leave in an hour but I stayed glued to my seat until the very end. A wonderfully tender film filled with grit and courage. Just the right balance of reality and heroism to make a splendid film...Not to forget the good looking young men to view.

I was really surprised to finally see a great WWI air combat film. The combat scenes were magnificant and Jean Reno could not have been a better choice for the air squadraon comannder (the Professional). Read up on WWI aerial combat and youll see how realistic it was. Yes theres an element of a chick flick as to the romance that never was but didnt dominate the theme of the film Even the costumes used, one could tell they were pure wool which attested to making this movie as realistic as possible. I highly recommend the movie and will await its arrival on DVD. Dont miss it....it covers an era of world events little photographed in this world of tradtitonal military films.

first, it rates 2.5 stars out of 5, very middle of the road. the aircraft used especially the german fokker triplanes were all wrong for the time period. the french nieuport 17s V strutters were realistic, i thought the aerial combat scenes were done nicely except for the ending where the black knight gets shot by a sidearm (NOT!) i liked the blue max a whole lot better for accuracy (as far as time and type of aircraft flown) and i was disappointed that with 2006 technology and all the historical accountings of the first world war fighter pilots and the planes they flew, this is the best hollywood could come up with? for me, a very ordinary film, and it could have been so much better.

A well-done example of a tried-and-true genre. I was surprised and pleased by how involving the characters were, especially James Francos Kansas farmboy portrayal. It was a little contrived in getting the men to France, but afterward was on solid ground with their developing friendship and understanding of the job theyd blithely signed on to do. Even without a background in military history I knew enough to be bothered by all the red tri-wings. I can only think that the moviemakers believed it would make for more colorful aerial battles or that it would be easier to keep track of who was where if all the bad guys (except one) were red. Hmmm. But the scenery and the period feel of the piece outweighed that stubborn bit of inaccuracy. A pleasant surprise was the heartfelt, believable romance between the main character and the lovely French woman. From what my dad told me of his wartime experiences, this meeting of cultures and sexes was repeated over and over during WW I and WW II. It was especially poignant when, at the end, we learn that in real life the hero and the Frenchwoman didnt see each other again. The final punch of the movie came with the display of the photo of the historical Layfatette Esquadrille, complete with lion cub mascot. And it was a delight to learn that some of the men survived the war and went on to have interesting lives. . . even the guy who lost a hand!

Posted: 9/29/2006A review of Flyboys by Starfury319
I saw Fly boys a few days ago, and just wanted to offer my 2 cents worth. While I note the same accuracy points of cankyoldguy (an Albatroos or two would have looked cool, not to mention a camel, gun bus, etc.), I was able to get past them a little better. The plot was predictable, but still enjoyable. I loved this move (especially as WWI movies are quite scarce - esp good ones, with the Lost Battalion from AE being the exception) and will try to catch it again in the theatre and definately will add it to the DVD collection.

I really enjoyed the film Flyboys. It wasnt too over the top yet I really got into the air combat scenes. I am a girl and I got more into the film than my fiancee! The character development was nicely done and the audience became attached to each of the main characters. The love story was sweet and simple and the special effects were rather decent. It is a part of history that, I for one, had never quite paid attention to before. It is nice to have something like this out for a change.

Posted: 9/25/2006A review of Flyboys by crankyoldguy0
As an ardent fan of WWI aircraft and the pilots that flew them, I bound by nature to see any movie that has a WWI aircraft storyline. We saw Flyboys the first night it came out here, and I have to say that I enjoyed it from a perspective of the kind of movie they used to make in the good old days. It had good action sequences, great effects, and tons and tons of wonderful shots of the planes as well as the airfields and support facilities. Within the first 30 seconds, I realized that I would have problems with accuracy. The first giveaway is a scene that shows a newsreal of WWI footage that convinces a Texan rancher (Franco) on the lamb from the law to join... it talks about the Lafayette Escadrille...and then shows a nice line of Spad VIIs on an airfield. It is supposed to be early 1916. Only problem is...the Spad VII was not introduced until late 1916--almost 1917...and the insignia on the planes is that of the Hat in Ring Squadron...an American Squadron that did not exist until 1918. Then of course, as has been mentioned in other posts, the Fokker Triplane was not even introduced and flown regularly until Aug-Sept 1917. As there were only a handful more than 300 of them ever made, it is unlikely to see huge squadrons of them at a single time in flight. The most common planes in service at that time were Albatross and Pfalz fighters. There are countless other gaffs that make this movie historically laughable...but the real pisser here...is that almost all of the planes are CGI animations anyway...so if you are creating the planes anyway...why the heck woudlnt you at least take the time to make the planes historically acurate??? LAZY!! If you can just get over the cartoonish portrayal of enemies and their one-color-plane fits all portrayal, and just sit back and watch a modern version of a 1940s War-Romance movie- you will have a great time!
