It does borrow from two well known Japanese animes (Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop). I personally think this adds to the series because it gives a nod to segment of entertainment that is only beginning to get recognition in the USA. Each episode is self-contained except for a few, which ties the series together. Serenity, the movie, is good, but it doesn't sufficently wrap up the series. Since Fox pulled the plug early on the series, there are many unanswered questions in the box set. But I could still watch it over and over again because Joss Whedon has created truly memorable and unique characters yet again. Was this review helpful? First did pay per view Serenity and then went out and bought Firefly Series DVD at full price at Best Buy. Watched it numerous times and gave a copy to a friend last Christmas. I dont watch much TV, dont like science fiction, but this series was-is the best. Would pay to have it back. Willing to subscribe. Whatever.

My dad and best friend watched this show and were so ecstatic about the show that I just had to see it for myself. I am glad that I did. This show was such a treasure. I am just sorry to say that ended so quickly. What is up with networks these days?! Whenever a good show comes on TV, it usually is quickly cancelled. Crappy reality TV shows have turned me away from watching TV shows. Shows like this need to be given a chance, and the networks just need to keep their pantyhoses on before deciding to cancel.
Anyway, if anyone is a fan of science fiction, westerns, comedies, dramas, adventure, or even a little romance, this show is the one for you. I was not too keen on westerns or even some science fiction, but you dont even exactly have to be a fan of either. This show just pulls you right in, and you care about the characters and what is going to happen to them in their adventures. The acting is superb, the action sequences excellent and often hilarious, the special effects are pretty good, and the characters are all likable. (Yes, even Jayne at times)
I recommend that if you did not see this show when it aired on TV, go buy the DVD. It is well worth every penny. I repeat. This show is truly a treasure that shouldnt be missed. Id never even heard of Firefly or the movie sequel Serenity but now im a full on fan.
If the powers that be read any of these reviews they should know that they have people asking for another series or another movie and that they could make a fortune from doing that - i RARELY buy dvds but this one definatly earned my money. Intelligent, funny, character driven drama that just happens to be based in a Sci-Fi universe. Fox should get a Darwin award for canceling it before the first season ever finished airing. I only discovered it a few weeks ago and now I'm completely obsessed. I'm a fan of Joss's writing (Buffy and Angel) but this series outdoes both. It's new and original, has great plot lines, well-rounded, well writen chacters, A FANTASTIC ENSEMBLE CAST, and some of the best writing I've seen in a long time. It's my new favourite show. I can't believe that FOX cancelled such an amazing show, I'm just waiting on the film now.

However, I love all Joss Whedons work. It's just a shame that this was cancelled so early, hopefully the success of the DVDs and the upcoming movie will show Fox the error of their ways, and reconsider this series. But unfortunately selling it to another network is not an option, as Jewel Staite (Kaylee) stated in a recent interview that Fox has the rights to this show for the next 10 years, so they'll either have to make movies till then, and hope another network picks it up after that, or get Fox to bring it back. I can hardly believe I almost missed out on such a great show. I'm not a big fan of TV. The last show that had me hooked was ER. But, after having seen this masterpiece, I cannot imagine how it ever got cancelled. So now I'm left wanting for more. <br>What made this show shine was the incredible storylines and character development. The special effects were different, but in a good way. They added character to the show, as did the fantastic music. You don't have to be a science fiction fan to enjoy Firefly. If you enjoy great writing, great acting, and deep characters, then you owe it to yourself to take a look. You'll be hooked after the first episode. <br> Was this review helpful? I just completed watching the DVD set, and all I can say is: go and buy it! <br><br>As with the very best in Fantasy writing these days, the series doesn't cater much to techno-fascination, but focusses on the characters and their interactions, and this bunch of misfits are a joy to watch in that regard. It is reminiscent of Farscape in that respect, though more homey than epic. The people at Fox who messed with the series should be fired. Not to mention that it was very unpredictable, had a great shound track and a cast to die for. The main characters are veterans who served on the losing side of a civil war. It is a brilliant cross between the sci-fi and western genres.
