Its hard to describe the plot of this film as its a remake of an older film and must be looked at in the context of the values of the time. Its directed beautifully, I think, and it is beautiful to look at. Some people might find the acting over the top, but you have to remember the era it is evoking. Moore, Quaid, Haybert and especially Clarkson give complex and nuanced performances. This movie is NOT anti-American or pro-gay or pro-communist as some other reviewer(s) have indicated its a simple story of self-identity, love and loss which is timeless. Most of all, its moving without being manipulative, and refers to a time and place in America which we cannot ignore. I highly recommend it for adult viewers as it has become one of my favorite movies of all time (and I usually watch horrors and monster films).

This is the story of Kathy, a suburban housewife, who is devoted to her husband and family. To outsiders her family appears to be perfect. But Kathy and her husband are struggling with a secret. Kathy turns to the family gardener in an innocent friendship that is not tolerated by her community.

Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid play husband and wife, and Dennis Haysbert plays the family gardener. All the acting is excellent. Each of the actors gives multilayered emotion filled performances.

The film is beautiful to look at. It is a modern film that reminds me of the old technicolor films of the 40's.

The film is worth it!

This movie is about a married man who decides he prefers to be a homosexual and his wife who decides she is going to have an affair with a black man in the 1950's. There, you can now tell anybody all about the movie. No climax, no catchy ending, it just goes on with no attempt at any part of a story except the middle, and that's been drawn out to movie length. I've seen long distance telephone service commercials with better plots.

I agree with the critics, this is an A+ movie. For all the ones here who gave it a bad review, all I can say is they didn't understand it. These are the ones who should stick to such classics as "Dumb and Dumber" and not waste their time on a real movie. This was a "real" movie, the most true to life movie that I have seen in a long time. I lost myself, almost as if I were there with these people. I believe that this is a must see, your missing out if you listen to the ignorant people.

This is a perfect story that shows that perfect families don't exist. Julianne plays Kathy, a wife and mother of two living in Connectticut. Her husband, (Dennis Quaid), has been hiding his homosexuality and finally can't hold it back anymore. This is when Kathy's world starts to tumble.Julianne should've won "Best Actress". And Dennis deserved a at least a nomination. See it!

This movie was worth the watch, just to be taken back to another time. The colors, and sets, the clothes were spectacular! It painted the perfect picture of the perfect family. And it reminded the audience that you can't judge a book by it cover. The messages were heavy, and I think apply to life now over 45 years later. I liked the quiet stength in Kathy that wilts in the heat of peer pressure, reheats, only to have her new found strength be useless in the light of reality. This movie made me wonder what Ward and June Cleaver were like behind closed doors. And it does leave one thinking that reality today may not be so bad compared to the reality of our parents time.

This film delves into issues that face us today but the setting is at a time when no once talked about such things. Lewis is a housewife who is living the ";heavenly"; life with 2 kids and a successful husband until she discovers he is in love with a man. Since homosexuality was considered a mental illness back then, she thinks that a doctor's visit will ";cure"; him. This film looks into the emotions of a man who is trying to hide who he is and the effects it has on his family. Today the issues of racism and homosexuality are not really issues- men can marry men and races all mix. The interesting part of this film is seeing it through the eyes of someone living in the 50's when everyone lived by strict moral codes and lived ";in a box";. Watching the acting of this film is entertaining enough- Dennis Quaid does a fantastic yet understated job as a man who is torn between what he has made of his life and what he really desires.

Fall in New England was the perfect ";Heaven";. It took me back to a different time when class and race had a place and no one dare cross the lines. Small town Americana right down to the town gossip and scandals. Dennis Quaid made that kiss all the more hard to accept as he appeared to be everyones next door neighbor.

This was a decent movie. The plot was interesting, and it was the same old cliched crap on a shingle that Julianne Moore's movies usually are. Her acting wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't impressive. That's a big step up for her. She's usually total crap. In this she's only semi crap. I think that's more due to the script and the direction than her own talent though. She is after all the worst actress in the world, not counting J-Lo of course.

This movie was horrible. There was no point, no morality lesson, no end to the ceaseless pathetic dialogue that makes you feel as if you could just rip your ears off. The whole film is tortuous, and apparently it was just a bad year for cinema when a movie like this can be nominated for Academy Awards (thank God it didn't win).

It's obvious from the user reviews that you either get it or you don't. Todd Haynes takes themes and images that may seem familiar, and delivers the unexpected at every turn. I was amazed at how a film could be so devoid of cliche.I'm also amazed that Haynes did not get a Best Director nomination.Great performances, cinematography, production design, music, astonishing on every level.

I didn't loosen up to Julianne Moore's character until about half-way through the movie. Yes, we understand that she's a 50's housewife who's caught up in her perfect world; but who the hell is that perfect? Her continuous sweet smiling seemed like an constant unnecessary reminder of how nice she was - it was just too much. To her credit, I must say, she got better as the movie wore on. Dennis Quaid - I did not connect with him at all. The movie itself was engrossing at times, but some parts felt too forced at times.

Far From Heaven is an incredibly well-developed, well-directed, and well-acted film. I've read a few others' reviews here about how the film is over-acted and the scenery too phony. I think you're missing the point. The idea was that these folks in this film had the ";ideal"; 1950's marriage. The 2.5 kids and the white picket fence. Where everyone knows and likes their neighbor. But underneath all that idyllic veneer, lies ugly truths that were not socially acceptable for the time. The acting is SUPERB! Julianne Moore nails the perfect housewife, trying to hold on to the shreds of her reality with a thread, to PERFECTION. Dennis Quaid as a supposedly red-blooded male trying to hide/avoid/stifle his true emotions for other men is a treat to watch. The direction is wonderful.. the scenery is SOOO crucial to the idea that, in reality, these two people are as FAR FROM HEAVEN, as they could possibly be.I'd highly recommend this film. The cultural lessons it teaches us about our own history, which was not so very long ago, and from which we have not necessarily advanced so very far, are invaluable.
