For me this movie is a gentle reminder that whatever paths we plan to walk, life chooses its own way. I loved the contrast between the present day daughters watching their mother die and the past remembrances of a dying woman. We are all products of the events and people who touch our lives.

Was very much looking forward to the movie. But very quickly it was apparent that it was not going to be what I had hoped. My problem with the film is the consistent jumping back and forth between current day and remembering when, in neither case was either moment long enough to develop the story or give you a reason to care about any of the characters. It is a very very poor version of the Bridges over Madison county. Both movies use the death of a parent to tell the story but Evening's two daughters do not add to the story. In the end of the movie there are no real insights or genuine pearls of wisdom shared it just leaves you wondering why did I spend 2 hours watching this.

Looked forward to this movie when watching reviews on TV, but it was a bit disappointing. Some good lessons but the ending was so abrupt. It could have been alot more enduring and perhaps stronger scenes, it had great actresses, but a let down in my opinion.

If it was not for all the top actors this would be a total flop. Slow moving and in the end nothing matters.

As a lover of excellent movies, of which there are many, I found Evening a definite mixed bag. The acting in this movie was superb for the most part although I began to find Claire Danes a bit too-wholesome-to-be-true and Toni Collette's slack-lipped poutiness a little wearing- but Meryl Streep held her own as always in a classy, winning performance and overall it was a marvelous job. What I noticed was that I ceased to be drawn in after a while, and the 'cheesy' alert began to start flashing in front of my eyes. There were so many times when the plot became very thin and scenes became long and drawn out. The crumpled note in the dying man's hand, the inevitable old 'secret' shack in the woods as a lovers' hideaway, and the always-billowing curtains in the death room.....it just detracted from the crediblity of the story and had me rolling my eyes in the dark and squirming restlessly, not liking being taken for a fool as an audience member. The scenery was beautiful as were the people (were their ever overweight, plain people- not to mention non-whitesin those days?) but it was very very long.

“Evening” is a meditation on regret, youth squandered, opportunities passed by and love lost. Yes, we’ve seen this story before; a person at life’s end, reflecting on what could-have been had they been more valiant. And even though it’s a story oft told, it appeals because it ponders the universal questions: What should I do with my life? What have I done with my life? Beyond that there’s the stellar cast: Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Toni Colette, Natasha Richardson and Claire Danes. Is this a chick-flick? Not exactly, the men in the film grapple with their looming destinies too. But, it certainly dabbles into the keenly feminine struggles of marriage and children. In particular the film studies the losses women may encounter as they embark onto the marriage-and-baby-carriage adventure. Ann, portrayed by Claire Danes (in her youth) and Vanessa Redgrave (older version), is the catalyst for the film’s many questions. We encounter Ann as a youthful, spirited singer from New York. She’s been invited to her friend Lila’s New Port wedding. This is the spring board for both young women into the grown-up world. It is this singular event and one handsome, mysterious man that define both women forever. Shown via flashbacks, the film slowly reveals how Ann came to be an old woman on her death bed, bemoaning her lost love, Harris. In the end, we learn that a life’s journey should not be measured by perceived mistakes. Nor should life be lived with the constant baggage of regret. Doing so only leads to futile misery, for we cannot change the past. Have we heard this lesson before? Yes. But we have not seen it delivered by these luminous women. This film was wonderful. Go see it with your daughters, your gal pals or on your own, but don’t miss it.

I saw this movie on Saturday evening 06 30 07. I rate the movie a 4 out of 5 because the plot progression between past and present were a bit jerky. Over all the film was very good, casting and acting was impecable, scene choices and location were lovely and believable and the props, especially the cars were amazingly beautiful. Buddy was the most

Some things I liked but in general it was a bit drawn out. The costumes and period settings were lovely to see and the performances were sound. The script just dragged for the first two thirds of the film. The ending was, however; moving.

Changing between time periods was seamless. I cared about many of the characters and story lines. However, there were many times I did not FEEL what the movie was trying to portray. For example, I understood Ann was supposed to be terrified singing at the wedding because she was out of her

I was anxiously awaiting the release of this movie after seeing previews and the star-studded cast. Boy was I disappointed!!! What a waste of talent. It was the looooooooooooongest evening I've spent at the movies in a while...felt more like a 100 evenings. Death came way too slowly...as did the end of the movie. Characters were very unlikeable...who really cared about their lives??? A dysfuntional family in a dysfuntional movie. :(

Saw this movie yesterday with my daughter. We loved it. Characters were believable. Storyline went down easy. This was a nice movie to see on a hot day, escaping the heat. I would definately see it again. The actresses are wonderful. We were amazed at how well they matched the young actresses to those elder actresses. I rate a movie at how many times I looked at my watch. The best movie would be no watch peaks. I looked once during this movie. See it with your girlfriends or older daughters. It was worth it for me.

I was very disappointed in this movie. I had heard that it was compared to the Notebook but it never captured me. First, the characters are not developed enough. I never fell in love with any of them. Second, there is far too much time given the main character's death bed and not enough given to the love story. Why didn't they end up together? We never know. Third, some of the acting was just over the top, and not believeable. All in all, I would not spend money at the theatre but would wait for DVD rental.
