Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  university of lifePosted: 1/8/2005A review of Empire of the Sun by hestia19396 how a child survives through the plight of war is the story of "empire of the sun" an inspiring tale of human fortitude and tenacity. its also about how quickly war brings on maturity. this child (amazing performance by bale) grows up fast and learns to adapt quickly in order to survive. children are strong willed and overcome adversity better than adults.
when the boy jim says " i can bring anyone back" trying to revive a dead soul, in fact he really means to bring back his former innocent self.
he lost his innocence in this fantastic tale but children have the capacity to forget and the will to overcome anything and so bale's character represents hope. Was this review helpful? Those who don't see this apparently appreciate the 1 and a half star category of films...Christian Bale is wonderful as well as John Malcovich. But the reward--assuming the viewer possesses these qualities--is well worth it.<br>The patience required is, in part, due to the length of the film--sometimes a bit dragging--as well as to the irritating little brat portrayed by the young Bales. In fact, the overall performance by Bales is brilliant as he demonstrates the changes on his character caused by his captivity and by his interactions with the other captives and the Japanese captors.<br>This child's perspective is juxtaposed with those of the others, as well as with a life changed dramatically. But I entirely disagree. I think this movie is AWFUL. Several very annoying songs (that are still stuck in my head, 4 months later), a corny plot and silly boys yelling "English Boy" over and over again are not to my taste.
