I laughed until I thought I would cry. The dark humor in this movie is better than any other movie made in a long time. I would recommend this movie to all. Was this review helpful? The beginning was kind of good, and I thought it was going to get better. It got all messed up when Orlando and Kristen stopped talking on the phone and met eachother in person. I dont think veiwers really needed to see his plan for killing himself quite so much. After that it started getting better and I thought this might be a pretty good movie. And I was wrong. About halfway through the movie I realized this was a movie about a suicidal guy planning his dads funeral. And also realized the romance took second place to everything else that was going on. I think the cremation vs. burial debate may have added absolutely nothing to the story, as did most of the rest of the movie. The almost-romance between the two Claire and Drew was good, but all in all the movie left me with a feeling of vague creepiness, even though it was supposed to be a comedy. I like Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom but this film just did not do it for me. Maybe I missed something but there was just something lacking from it. I also thought it was just all over the place. It didnt make alot of sense, especially Susan Serandans character. I know one reviewer said that we should enjoy real-life situations and despair. For me, I like seeing movies that are not real-life--I get that everyday and I want to enjoy something more upbeat and fun and not about killing yourself and remorsing for lost time with your Dad. Not only is Cameron Crowe an incredible writer, but he also has a gift when it comes to making music just as important as the actors. The songs he uses in the movie to accompany the emotions that you, the viewer, are experiencing make the film that much more special and moving. Maybe I loved it this much because Im a creative spirit as well, and I truly appreciate art and music, perhaps thats a prerequisite in order to emotionally attach to this film, although I also feel that anyone whos ever lost someone will also connect to this movie, especially the last 20 minutes. I loved the way they captured Kentuckys simple ways. It left me longing for summer so badly. But overall this is such a simplistic movie documenting the haze you experience with the loss of a loved one. Not quite knowing what to do and wishing you had done more. So, allow me to tell it how it is. Elizabethtown is a movie about good people in bad situations. But even more, its finally breaking through, realizing life isnt fair, going farther than the extra mile. Elizabethtown is a glorious movie calling out to the reality of small town life. Sure theres no explicit content, nobody says the f-word 42 million times, and Orlando never gets to finish out the horrid bloody yet highly remarkable suicide scene. This is what life is all about. That everyone should get that chance to roll down the window and try to cry. That we all should take that one last emotional road trip to discover what we always knew. Elizabethtown isnt a mess of a movie....its a spirituial awakening. But youll never see it if you analyze what wasnt there. Emotions are the movie. Was this review helpful? But the reason most reviews were so negative is because most American people can understand smart movies. They like a) things that blow up, b) People dying in massive amounts, and or c) sappy romance movies that hav be redone thousand of times. Elizabeth was a smart drama with dark humor. It was not meant to be about the love story. The movie was about human minds and the limits of the capacity for bad events that they can hand, the journey of one man as he struggles to find his place in life. The love part of the story was just an added thing to the story. Claires (Kirsten) part in this movie is to get Drew (Orlando) to move along in his journey. I dont recommend this movie to people who can think for themselves and dont like a movie that steps out of the box. My favorite thing about the movie is how the people in this movie react to the things that are happening around them like real everyday people would, not how movie people do. Was this review helpful?
