I thought this film was excellent. It certainly got me studying again and I thought CAte Blanchet was wonderful!!! I am saddened by critics who are so hard on her!!! How can anyone say she is boring??? She is after all playing british royalty who are very controlled with their emotions!!! I thought she struck just the right note with showing elegant royalty and depicting emotion with the control that royalty is expected to convey!!!

I was excited about seeing this film. I really thought this would be one of the best films of this year. The acting was great, but it didn't save this film from becoming almost too boring to watch. Everything was so predictable. England was at war with Spain. That was mostly due to the fact that Queen Elizabeth of England was Protestant and King Philip of Spain was Catholic. The King of Spain had such a hatred for Queen Elizabeth because of her religion. He thought of her as a very wicked person. I wish the woman that played Queen Elizabeth would have been a more interesting person. I suppose Queen Elizabeth was not someone that did very much to get attention from others. There are not many scenes of her venturing from the safety of her castle. She lived a very solitary life. Don't expect to see non-stop fighting between England and Spain. There are no memorable battles in this film. I saw two or three ships on fire, but there are not many scenes of the Spanish and the English fighting with swords. This is not a swashbuckler. The biggest problem I had with this movie is that nothing unexpected happened. It was as if I was simply awaiting the inevitable. I was waiting for England and Spain to become involved in a war, and I already knew what the outcome would be. This movie could have been similar to Brave Heart, but the director kept the violence to a minimum. He didn't take any risks, and he didn't hype the threat of war.

When a movie is made of a flesh and blood person of immense historical significance it should at least be fairly accurate! Elizabeth was 53 years old when the events in this movie took place! She did not go charging into battle or still have tender moments with Sir Walter Raleigh. Cate Blanchett is an actor of remarkable ability and presence but she can only do what the script says...blame the writers and the director and the producer for this inferior peice of cimematic bombast. Read Michael Medved.com for his take on this...he is encyclopedic in his historical knowledge and lambasts this movie. It's too bad movies like this are made. The real history was no less absorbing so why is the movie FICTIONAL...they should just call this "fictional history" like a romance novel...not reality.

Words won't express how good I think this film was. The acting, sound track, photography, costumes, direction, set decoration, screenplay, were absolutely perfect. This will clean up at the Oscars. Blanchett gives a performance that ranks with the best of all time. I still see the fantastic images of the burning ships, the Queen leading the troops, and those great closeups of Elizabeth. This is a must see film. To say that this is not better than the original is insane. If you think that, then quit reviewing films and get a job you can really do.

Blanchett reprised the role of Elizabeth in mid-life and she owns the characterization, hands down! Too bad the critics always get it wrong! I have learned to be sure and see any movies they pan ... I usually am not disappointed. Yes, the costuming is over the top and dazzling but so was the oppulence of the period. I must say I was really impressed with the brief but powerful portrayal of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, by Samantha Morton. Wow, an illuminating spot in an altogether glowing period piece. In the distant future, I would hope Cate Blanchett takes us into the final years of the Virgin Queen's life. That would make for a remarkable trillogy.

A fine cast, excellent production values, and stylish direction can't save this movie from itself. Which means that it tries to engage too many story lines in a two hour span and ends up feeling a bit shallow and derivitive. The climax of the movie, the great battle between the Royal Navy and the Spanish Armada, is not well drawn or especially dramatic, and not terribly accurate, either. Cate Blanchett is o.k. as Queen Lizzie, but nothing special, and this time around Geoffrey Rush is wasted in the role of Francis Walsingham. Clive Owen is, well, handsome. Everyone else is good enough but the movie just doesn't have the energy or impact the first one had nine years ago. This will not be a trilogy.

I was captivated through the entire movie. You could have heard a pin drop in the theater because everyone was watching intently. The costumes were magnificent & Kate Blanchett did an amazing job. It was great to see a film about history that made it a little more personal & showed it from a different perspective. Shame on the critics that pan it!
