Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  I agree,not greatPosted: 10/15/2007A review of Eastern Promises by wizy563 I like Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortgensen but after seeing this picture I was disappointed.No surprises here...parallels to whats in the news with Russia are obviously here.The point is nailled home too much with lots of gratuitous violence.Sure there's rough guys who will killyou and chop you up into bits and then heroically save little babies the next.I didn't really see a consistent story here just a bunch of vingnetts that didn't quite hold together.Doesn't deserve the great reveiws it seems to be getting. Cassel is someone I will now watch for - his acting was superb. Watts is completely real in her delivery.
If you love movies and love the details and performances, this is a must see! If you want something casual to watch or you are squemish - hold off.

Naomie Watts was fantastic as the brave midwife who confronts the situation and never backs down. Viggo is badass as the tough as nails gangster. This movie was definitely worth watching and I can't wait until it's on DVD. Was this review helpful? The Kingdom is awesome. The Brave One and Yuma are both very good. Lots of nudity in this so don't take your date if you aren't sure she would like it. Not a first date movie. I thought the casting was great and the script was excellent. I think that the ending left room for some sequels, as did the Godfather movies, my all time favorites. This one, though, is much better. It is very gruesome and graphic, and, at time, outright uncomfortable. The story was interesting and told in a way that, even though a bit naive, was still gripping. I was soooooooo surprised to hear Viggo speak Russian and Ukrainian with excellent pronunciation. Go see it, but don't take teen agers with you. Was this review helpful? I was very impressed by his acting and ability to speak and sound russian. I thought this was a very good movie albeit heavy and oppressive at times. Great acting, character development, taunt story line, yet the movie ends abruptly and with loose story ends. Maybe these endings are being held for a sequel, I don't know. I wish their was more to the story and the movie should have been a bit longer. They just touched subjects in the movie and never got into them to deep. In my opinion, Promises lacks the narrative thrust and thrills of History. That said, Promises is a very good movie, with some very fine performances, especially Viggo Mortensen, who just gets better with every film. History of Violence was my favorite movie of 2005, and although Promises doesn't measure up to that masterpiece, it's still one of the best fims I've seen in 2007. By the way, the steam-bath scene is very very gutsy for Viggo and it's all that you've heard and more. My understanding is that there was no double.
