The AMG reviewer and I apparently didn't watch the same film. Great books cannot be much better adapted than this. It's the casting that carries the film. I saw Prochnow in "Wing Commander" (an obvious homage to this role) and it inspired me to watch this film again. It does honor to one of the greatest books of all time.

Dune is a great movie! It can be confusing if one doesnt watch the prologue first, but the prologue does a good job of giving the necessary background for the movie. I love the way Jessica is such a strong woman...she went against the command of those in charge and gave birth to a son instead of a daughter because she loves the Duke so much. And, when questioned about her choice, she stands by it. Yet, she also is not afraid to be emotional and feminine. I think the computer graphics in this movie are excellent, especially for a movie made about twenty years ago when we didnt have the technology we have now. Dune rocks!

I did not read the book but this adaption was thought provoking beautiful and had some great acting. the possibility of spice being a psycedlic drug warping time and space is not far fetched the probabilty of a planet being exploited for it very high--love the effect this film had on my imagination.

while there are most certainly some lacking elements I can't deny that it gave me a glimpse at a couple of my fav actors... Patrick Stewart,,, while like in Excalaber only had a relatively minor role he still carrys it off with his typical aplomb and grace. he proves that he doesn't have to be a headliner to be serious about his art. it also introduced me to kyle Mcglauclin and Richard Jordan. again both extraordinary talents in thier field that I don't think we here enough from, or were given nearly enough credit...

Here is a movie i had to ha ve in my collection. I just wish I could get the long Director's cut. Cause i watch Dune over and over again. AlsoSci-Fi channel, don't get me wrong I love your station, bit if you are going to remake a movie, do'nt jack it up. Your 2000 version of my movie was stank.

Seriously flawed as a stand alone story, this version is for die hard fans of the series only. If you watch it only for the costumes, sets and characterizations then it actually works, but you need to have read the book recently to appreciate what David Lynch tried to do here. If you can find it, the 4 hour unedited underground copy (complete with cartoon story-boarded scenes to complete unfinished portions) is a brilliant look at what Lynch might have been able to do with more time, money and support from a studio with guts. Well worth digging around for.
