My first hand knowledge of catholic schools is that even the meanest nuns did not address priest that way. During this time period and later Nuns behaved like second class citizens to priest! That my friends is why this situation got so ugly for so long unchecked! Was this review helpful? Mrs Streep, as well as the other actors played their parts expertly. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Am I the only one that hated the ending? This movie was cold, gray and somewhat slow, but completely captivating. The cast played their roles with amazing talent. All the way down to the tearful, snotty nose scene with the boy's mother. Wow! Meryl Streep was so convincing, I'm sure she was a nun in another life. BUT....the ending was a let down. I needed closure. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful I enjoyed this movie and the cast was great. They took a character who would be universally revilled (a possibly abusive priest) and made him very likeable. The nun who tried to bring him to justice was made to look very rigid and mean. I think it was this juxtaposition that made the movie very thought provoking. I do think it is unfortunate that the movie chooses to continue to beat up on the Catholic church, which has already been knocked down after decades of propaganda. How about an expose of Muslim elders who gang rape adulterous girls before they have the village stone them to death? Or maybe something about black on black slavery that exists today. Or the genocide of black muslims by Arab muslims? Oh, that's right. It's not nice to criticize other cultures or religions. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful The movie raises provacative issues about integrity, moral choice, and compassion. It has fine performances from the the three principal actors, the best of which is given by young Amy Adams, who brings a fresh, if rather naive honesty to her role as a novice nun. The film seems curiously slow moving and I didn't really feel engaged by the story. This could be because of deficits in the screenplay and direction. Worth a look. Was this review helpful? The underlying tone and storyline are what drive this movie and its viewers to the end. Streep plays the hard-nosed, disciplining nun to a tee, while Seymour Hoffman maintains his cool demeanor throughout the movie. One is also drawn into Sister James' position of being "caught in the middle" and becoming deeply troubled as a result. I found myself constantly questioning whether Sister Aloysius was exaggerating the situation or whether Father Flynn was actually guilty. Then, I was thrown for a total loop by the boy's mother's reaction about the situation. This movie puts into perspective how people who acquire power through religious, political or social means, affect all of us in one way or another. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful I've seen the play on broadway, and I've read it numerous times since I was in theatre in high school. Meryl Streep doesn't play Sister Aloysius, she IS Sister Aloysius. She shows that underneath all that hard exterior lies a woman who has experienced pain and who DOES have a heart. Amy Adams plays Sister James to a T as well. I highly recommend this movie. And as for the whole Catholic Church thing...it's sad, but it is a reality. I'm not saying it happens in every parish, but even the Pope has addressed the crisis. Don't let that take away from the brilliance of this film. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 4 users found this helpful Posted: 11/28/2008A review of Doubt by another_wonderer0 Why does hollywood only make negative movies when the Catholic Church is the backdrop? The Church and its faithful are always persecuted by the movie making industry. Other religions would not stand for the kind of overt bashing that take place in this tired attack. Why can't anyone in hollywood make a positive movie about the Catholic Church and its teachings? Is the world really so hateful and inrollerant towards this faith? Was this review helpful?
