I rented Dogville because I am a fan of Nicole Kidman and I enjoy Independent films. This movie has a good and interesting premise but at almost 3hrs. it is so incredibly painful to sit through the whole movie in one sitting. I got the point hours before the movie finished. The performances were very good but any tension or suspense that was buildt was completely lost to the pacing and length of the film! The movie has good but after the second hour I was asking for this dog to be put out of its misery.

Yes, it's truly long, but I didn't notice til well over two hours into it. Yes, disappointing at first the setting and narration, hoped that would go away, but got used to it. But Nicole, she is the star of this movie, everyone else revolves around her. Only her face shows light, her movements carry each scene. The mild beginning and slow pace gradually change in intensity as the movie progresses. For the first half hour or so, we kept saying, 'this is weird', or 'when is something going to happen'. But after that, we were silent and engrossed as the characters and story unfolded. There is a one-dimensionality about all the characters except Grace, which was not a bad thing in this case. The last 45 minutes of this film were so riveting, so upsetting, the violence and her degradation so unexpected and painful, it was hard to watch but impossible to turn away. Rarely has a movie wanted an ending, deserved an ending, and gotten that perfect ending, like this one has. Not only the violence and action climax, but also Grace's heart and mind come to clarity and take the final step into her true reality, and she does what we want her to, what we would do, or hope we would or could do. I would only recommend this movie to a few people I know, I fear for most it would go over (or under) their head. I will be thinking of this movie for quite a while, and definitely watch it again, hopefully with someone who hasn't seen it so I can enjoy their reactions.

By far one of the most astonishing accomplishments of an already incredible director. Not to be missed.

The movie started, for me, with a groan. A minimalist set on a sound stage-- ugh. I could just predict how boring this was going to be.... However, despite the demand on the viewer's attention and intellect, it's an extraordinary and original film. After the eye-candy addict in me adjusted to the starkness of story and setting, the story captivated me and I began to focus in on the characters and the themes of innocence/guilt, the human condition, morality, mercy/judgement, redemption, abuse/victimhood. The question arose several times--"She knows us, but we don't know anything about her." Just who IS "Grace", this mysterious stranger? Many films have used the mysterious stranger motif-- some Clint Eastwood westerns and Peter Seller's "Being There", for example-- show how people can project their own ideas onto the mysterious stranger, and use them to get their needs met. The same motif is at work in this film.
Now, why was she called "Grace"? And why was Tom's character "Tom Edison"?
Sorry folks, but the idea of filming a "play" just doesn't work...at least in this instance. The attempt to be artistic by shooting the whole thing on an open indoor stage (with street names written on the floor) isn't daring...it's dumb. And having the whole thing narrated by a man with a British accent doesn't class it up...it just makes it all the more distracting. The hand held video cinematography just adds to the confusion. It's ironic, this film was supposed to be a bare bones affair...but there's so much bare bones going on, you won't be able to follow the story...it's cluttered with artistic BS. "Dogville" can be summarized thusly...take a high school play, have someone film it with a hand held camcorder, throw in some narration, and there you have it...it ain't art...it's amatuerish.

Wow...best movie I've seen in a VERY long time. Very rare to see this level of artwork now days. Not for the simple minded though. The type of people this movie criticizes will probably feel just like the town people felt after "Grace" tells them what they've made her go through..they will not get it and/or feel so exposed, that they will hate it.

Dogville is a very unique film-with practically
no sets, little action for the first 2 hours, stilted dialogue and boring characters or charactures made all the worse by voiceover plot descriptions/commentary with 9 written intros for
chapter descriptions to tell you very briefly a synopsis of what you are about to see-----well I was about to leave the movie about 1/2 dozen times given the above but . . .
The movie pulls together a parable which makes
a number of comments about America, Americans,
its arrogance, small town mindedness, violence and perhaps sometimes superficial kindness---brought home more starkly in the black/white photos of the poor, the homeless and the distitute
in the land of plenty--to the the tune of "Young Americans" during the ending credits.
The movie's powerful ending works to make its
points and can be a takeoff for discussions about American values, practices, politics, arrogance and hypocracy --but most viewers will be anxious for this slow moving, no backdrop,no cinematography movie to end however thought provoking it can be
This movie is more like a play that has been filmed- a bare, naked 'crucible'-that advante
guarde movie goers, looking for something terribly
different might seek for its own sake, but most
movie lovers would not suffer through to the
end -however good the ending is-

At first I was surprised about the setting of the movie...It's not your typical Hollywood flick...
During the movie, I noticed few couples get up to leave, oh how bad for them, they have missed out on a very meaningful ending. This movie talks about humanity at it's best and at it's worst when taken over by greed. These people of Dogville are like people everywhere. It is not just about young America, it is about the world population. Strongly recommend this movie to everyone. Nichole Kidman was fantastic. She is a true talent.

I know you will be be thinking,"What the hell?" and will be tempted to leave. Don't. The ending really is worth the wait. It is a loooong movie. If you are looking for a lot of action, sit this one out. (It all happens in the last ten minutes!)

I saw this film at Cannes and it was my favorite out of all that I saw. I have been waiting for it to come to theaters, but I have a feeling that many audiences might not have the patience to sit through the full 3 hours. It definitly isn't an action-packed 3 hours like The Return of the King, but it has something else to offer: an original take on filmmaking. The setting is brillant, especially for a film that looks to explore the many facets of humanity below the surface of everyday society. I don't remember too many details considering I saw it 7 months ago, but overall this film has an intelligent and provocative message that is beautifully presented. And the end is worth the wait...
