But they are few and far between, and the rest of the movie isnt worth the popcorn youll spill on the floor when you at last fall asleep from lack of amusement.
Its odd because the overall premise seems a strong oneformer child star burns out and grows into a terrible failure, both professionally and as a human being, and who better to oscillate between adult bitterness and childlike sentimentality than David Spade? Throw in John Lovitz as Spades long-suffering agent, add a handful of real former child stars (including Alyssa Milano from Teen Steam) for verisimilitude, get some jerks in there for Spade to play off of, and call it a day, right?
Well, they called it a day a bit too soon. The whole thing is like a easy-mix cake pulled out of the oven too early. Some of the situations, such as Spades solution for driving away his host-familys neighbor, are so anemic that you wouldnt buy it if you saw it on The Flintstones. And the movie is stuffed with jokes just that weak. It all seems very lazy. Was this review helpful? First of all this is a comedy, nothing more, you're nto supposed to read into it. If you do thatt oo much, you're watching the movie too deeply. This isnt an oscar nominated drama that you're supposed to read the lines between. It's just funny. It's a sweet comedy. Second of all, if you don't like the movie, don't just say " it %*($ed". It's stupid and you soud like it when you write things like that. David Spade was funny as usual, and the cast is great. Although I would have had Dickie marry his fake mom at the end, it's still a nice ending. Again, don't read so much into it! It's just a funny movie, don't go over-analysing it, like it's "silence of the lambs" and you have to find the 'secret' or something. Dickie slipping on the slip n slide and hitting the fence is funny, becasue it just is. Was this review helpful? I laughed and laughed, and then ended up crying. The good thing about this movie is, a lot of movies are funny, but this movie is funny and has a great moral to it. My favorite scene is the last one, but I am not about to tell about it, just because I don't wanna' give away the movie. There were no failings in this movie, except for some crude and sex-related humor, but that is exactly what I had expected of this movie. I don't recommend this movie for young viewers. This movie was written by David Spade and Fred Wolf, who also wrote Tommy-Boy. This is way better. David Spade is Dickie Roberts, and it is very funny. I loved it. Not a better movie was or ever will be created, or at least for a long time. This is a must-see, so see it. I loved it, so I bet anyone else who sees it will to. Was this review helpful? What I would'nt give to relive just one hour of playing outside with friends all day, not having to pay bills, chasing the girl next door, playing Nintendo.....getting beat-up, crashing my bike into a tree, being forced to live by militant rules such as having a curfew, not being able to drive, or play loud music, hey wait a minute, being a kid stunk. That's why as a child you dream crazy dreams like someday being an astranaut so you can get as far away from your house as possible.<br><br>My biggest dream as a child was to be on TV and have a funny catch phrase like "What'ch you takin' bout Willis?!" Now, after seeing what has come of many of my childhood TV heros, many leaving the glamour of the spotlight to enter rehab of some sort, I'm glad my prayers weren't answered. Dickie Roberts, hillariously played by David Spade, is no exception. His childhood TV career landed him a job as a depressed valet parker who wants nothing more then to reclaim his fame.<br><br>Although I was really skeptical after seeing the previews, Dickie Roberts turned out to be a pleasent surprise. Packed with sit-com esk humor, a fun story line, and cameos from the likes of Cory Feldman, Gary Colman, and Danny Bonaduce, it really is a movie that all ages will enjoy. Director Sam Weisman along with a producing credit for Adam Sandler, did an excellent job of casting and balancing child and adult humor throughout the film. There are solid acting performances from the children in the film, who adorably serve as Spade's comic backbone.<br><br>Dickie Roberts gives the kid in all of us a new bread of child star to aspire to be like, one who in the end journeys to discover the true meaning of happiness. (Be sure to stick around through the credits for the hilarious former childhood TV star choir, you won't want to miss it) <br><br> Was this review helpful? The jokes were funny and it brought me back to my childhood when i saw all the toys.my only question is what is a wiggle worm? (i've never heard of this toy.) One of the funniest parts was when David Spade was trying to learn to ride a bike.All together it was a good movie, but i think he should have made the movie and got the family.My last comment is you've got to be nucking futs not to see this movie!
