Date  Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  Compelling dramaPosted: 6/18/2009A review of Defiance by MyChimneyTop Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell and Alexa Davalos give very good acting performances in this very interesting movie by screenwriter and director Edward Zwick (book by Nechama Tec).
Zwick kept it moving and kept my interest in the characters.

Defiance is a true story of how in a forest in Bellaruse, the Bielski brothers saved themselves and other Jewish refugees from extermination during World War II. Jewish people from the country and cities alike survived against all odds thanks to the resistance, the leadership, courage, and determination of these brothers to live. Not only is it a powerful action film, it also reminds us of our ability to endure and overcome the unimaginable. Was this review helpful? The actors all did a fine job and the story is amazing! The only drawback that I noticed is that the story is fast and abbreviated. Considering the subject, the situations, and history of these people living in the forest, I would have liked more charactor developement. But then, so many of the charactors come, go and are replaced by new heros...so I can force myself to appreciate why the movie did not focus more on the final years, but on the brothers who led these people to a sense of freedom and "security." The movie basically follows an outline--but it's a powerful subject matter, mature, and thought provoking, as are most WWII stuff. Was this review helpful? The movie is BASED on true events. While Hollywood and the director took a lot of leeway to edit and or change some of the events to make the movie more exciting and marketable, it does not mean it was not based on actual events. I found the movie very compelling to watch. I was stunned by some of the violence and action, as anyone should be. I would hate to think I would ever become complacent about viewing such atrocities and necessary to survival acts of violence. I would love to see an extended version released on DVD that might include more scenes between Tuvia and Lilka. While it was not Schindler's List, it was a very good movie about another chapter in WWII's sad history of extermination and those who fought against it. Was this review helpful? Not much other than work will cause me to fight downtown Seattle parking and traffic - not to mention the ridiculously high costs of attending a movie at the Meridian - but this movie was worth every penny and more. I knew nothing of the story, let alone that 1,200 people survived German murderers in the forests of Belarus due to the courage and tenacity of two brothers. A story that needed to be told. I am glad three movies of this time period are out in a short span of time. I have seen all three, and this is the best of the three. Daniel Craig really captured the spirit and passion of the character. Go to see it before it is no longer on the big screen. I don't think the impact will be the same sitting at home watching it on DVD. It was so good to see that some Jews did fight back. It was so good to see and learn that many of the Jews that lived in this forest did survive WWII. It was amazing to see how people react under the most stressful conditions and pull together to survive. It truly shows how the sum of the parts are stronger as a whole. Was this review helpful? Certain facts are missing from the story. The brothers engaged in some atrocities of their own on the Red Army orders. The movie was not great, same basic scenes done hundreds of times. Adventure, excitement, suspense, romance, pain - it has it all. The acting was phenomenal. Definance left me with a deep sense of hope for humankind, especially because it is based on a true, truly heroic story! Definitely the best movie I've seen this year! Was this review helpful?
