The acting is on target and the caracters are unforgetable. can't wait until season 2 Was this review helpful? Deadwood is one of those shows that throughout the hour you either like, loathe, and sympathize (sometimes all three) with every character and cant wait until the following week to do it all again. It truly shows that not to far in our past, life was tough, dirty, and you better learn to watch your back or be fed to the pigs. Was this review helpful? It has been a long time since I've had a show #^!@ me in ! it is so well written, the set and costumes a excellently period. I have never heard such brilliant use of fowl language and it's very nice to see the charecter of calamity jane! Was this review helpful? Al Swearengen is a smart guy, and a good judge of character. He manipulates people and situations to his benefit. The F-word is used as often as teens today us "like" like you know what I mean, like. With all of that said I can't stop watching. There is an edge to the show that keeps me coming back. I love the old west, I thought Keith Caradine's charcacter Wild Bill was killed off to soon. I would have liked to have seen the Keith Carradine character, Wild Bill Hicock, developed a litte more. In my mind he was a much more complicated person. I give it 4.5 stars, I can imagine that was how people spoke, every other word a four letter word, but there is still to much profanity. Was this review helpful? With the hunt for gold surely to be a prize, I find no wish to go back in time in search of that ore, or a word sounding the same. Deadwood without a doubt has changed any view had of just what it was like to be living back in those times. Mud, whiskey, cussin', whorin', (did I mention cussin'?), and a taste of pork (don't forget the butcher shop) raises the hair on the back of my neck. Brackish, hair-raising, I find my jaw dropping lower with each episode. For those who missed the series from the beginning, hope that the re-runs begin quick. This show has everything needed to challenge even the Soprano's story line. The entire cast is awesome. If ever you need a real dose of the Old West, dare not miss Deadwood. When the new season opens with plots yet to be unfolded, I find myself yearnin’ for that time to be. Deadwood has to be one of the best Western's ever produced for we “sit at home cable types”. Acting superb, dialogue steeped with a brogue unheard of in any Western I’ve ever watched, and with each episode ending, leaving the viewer dumbstruck and yearning for more! Was this review helpful? Even better characters, a wonderful set and setting, great costuming, and writing that blows away anything on TV. David Milch's series has so many nuances, so much depth, you can explicate it like a Yeats or Wordsworth poem or you can simply enjoy the rough and raw energy of finely drawn characters like Al Swearengen, Seth Bullock, and Alma Garrett.

If you don't like Westerns, this program is unlike any Western movie or TV show you've ever seen. It is more like a great novel with themes of redemption, new beginings, greed, love, lust, and even humor and compassion.

Yes, as you've heard, the language is very coarse at times. But it is always in context. You probably don't want your grade school aged kids watching the show.

Catch "Deadwood's" replay (this was written July 2, 2004) on HBO2 then tune in for Season 2 in March 2005. Also, the hbo.com bulletin boards on the program are a real treat. The level of discussion about the series is extremely high. It will also help you catch up on the series and understand some of the characters' motivations.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend this series!

Todd D.
