And I do critique every movie I watch to the last segment. I loved this movie because it was almost like doing a movie on "Anne Bonny" but not. Plus the female character's whole persona rocked! Yes there were fake moments, but sometimes a person just has to love a pirate movie. And hey it's still better than "Mom and Dad Save the World".<br><br>If you're a pirate fan, or like to see women not play meek and mild sticks, this will satisfy! Was this review helpful? If your into action, this is certainly the movie for you. While it can never compare to Pirates of the Carribean, it still has some very elaborate and interesting fight scenes that kept me at the edge of my seat. Ok some say the plot stank, but I don't! It's a regular pirate story! Pirate's dad's killed, so she goes on a mission to find his treasure, while her 'Uncle' tries to kill her to take it for himself. This is my favorite Geena Davis film. I think she was a great Butt-Kicking heroine, watching her would make any woman proud to uh...be a woman! However, Matthew Modine is the weakest of the whole cast, and I can tell you that the critics would be a lot nicer to this movie if Michael Douglas played Shaw, but oh well, one Actor can't ruin the whole movie. All and all it was a pretty good movie, and deserved a lot more respect from the critics than was given. Then again, they are critics... Was this review helpful? It's one of the best pirate movies I've seen! Lot's of action and sword fighting. <br>This movie is a must see and should not be on the bomb list! I have it in my library and have watched it alot. People who ripped this film up according to some sort of cinematic standard are fairly moronic, especially considering the misplaced and bizarre praise heaped upon the Philosophy 101 paper that was "The Matrix." It also is very realistic looking as 17th century Port Royale, and the ships are amazing. Best pirate movie..I swear. IF you like pirates at ALL see this movie..pirates of the caribbean is cornier and not as cool. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Cutthroat still a top 10 swashbucklerPosted: 7/29/2003A review of CutThroat Island by FondMender I compare this contemporary swashbuckler to my top ten as follows: Captain Blood, w/ Errol Flynn, Hearts of Armor, a little seen 70’s or 80’s film from Spain I think, Pirates of the Caribbean, w/ Johnny D., and finally the original Excalibur, an early 80’s box office hit. Even although the film does not have pirates, it does show plenty of sword play and damsels in distress.
