I absolutely love this movie. It is on my top 10 all-time favorites, and I am not even into Karate type movies. This movie is not only beautiful, the plot is crazy--like a soap opera--except with armies...LOL. I love it! This is a must see...especially the final battle scene! Amazing!

A visual treat in which the viewer should not get too involved with the characters. They all DIE. Okay, all but one die. Truthfully, there is fascinating emotion in these characters the actors work it hard. Its just difficult to connect with the characters on a human level. Part of the reason for that is that there are so many secrets-- some of which you guess before theyre outed-- that motivations are murky at best. Dont know how much of this (if any) was based on historical fact, but it is a fact that the courts of every country have been rife with personal and political hatreds, spite, greed, and ambition... so why should China in 942 C.E. be any different? On the plus side, it was a fascinating look at the life and habit of the early Chinese emperors and their absolute power. Also, despite the excesses of color at times, it was stunning visually. And the actress who played the empress, Gong Li, is so beautiful, it was fascinating to watch her and revel in her extraordinary costumes. It would be too easy to draw conclusions about the Chinese way of doing things from this movie the obsessive love of order (You should see the quick clean-up after the attempted coup-- wish I could get them to come to my house!), the demand for uniformity (everyone of a certain station and function was clothed identically and made to look alike-- total interchangability!), and the intricate and obscure customs surrounding the emperors life and family. But this is just a piece of fiction for the camera and as such leaves us wondering how closely it resembled real Chinese royalty and palace life. Thought provoking. . .

I loved House of Flying Daggars, and was expecting the same quality. While I thought the costumes and scenery were wonderful, and the acting was, for the most part, well done, I was not impressed with the story, or at least how it was presented. And I agree, all the gold and red was very annoying, and I found myself yearning for blues and greens, and the rare outdoor scenes were ocular relief. There were also some very hard to swallow plot points, even for this type of movie, like how did those three story tall sheids just appear without the other army even noticing? Hmmm. Not what I expected, and I left feeling empty and cheated.

I saw this film last night. I had seen the 2 previous films of the director, Hero and the House of Flying Daggers. This film is boring to death. no actions, slow, very slow scene where nothing happens. the only intersting scene is the attack of the doctor and his family at the end of the film. I will give top marks to the costumes design and the rituals, but all that gold and red is really very annoying. a waste of my time. The House of Flying Daggers was wonderful. Pistoo

It is a wonderful movie. It shows you great secens of Tang Dynasty, which was one of the most prosperous dynasty in China. You could feel it from the dressing, the palace and each detail in the movie. Tang is a very open dynasty in China (You could see this from the girl dressing.) But it is totally true. When you see any true antique, especially painting, you could see the special girl dressing--baring half of the breast. Jay Chou is the most populor RB singer and composer in Asia. Tons of young people are crazy about him in Asia. Gong Li is one of my favorite asian actresses (Much much and much better than the silly, snobbish fighter and poser--Ziyi Zhang, although I shouldnt compare her with Gong Li). Anyway, Yimou Zhang stated that he is a great director again through this fabulous movie. It is a must see!
