It is number 4 on my personal list behind, "Saving Private Ryan", "The Dark Knight" and "Goodfellas". The scene when Chow Yun-Fat dies is one of the best and most beautiful scenes ever filmed. Also the scene when Fat and Michelle Yeoh are at a rest stop talking about their unfulfilled but deep love for each other is strong. The fight scenes are still the standard other films are still trying to obtain in various action movies to this day. Do not purchase/rent the English dubbed version; get the Cantonese version with subtitles. The Cantonese language is almost like poetry and it is actually easier to follow. The soundtrack is some of Ya-Ya Mo's best work ever. Released almost nine years ago, I recently played the CD during our family movie time and everyone loved it. It should have won the Oscar for Best Picture not just Best Foreign Film. Was this review helpful? It is a STORY, full of all the great themes: joy and sadness, love and hate, honor, pride, revenge; all woven together as expertly and effortlessly as the martial arts techniques therein. How many movies (other than by Kurosawa) combine shakespeare and kung fu so well?! Was this review helpful? I understand what the plot was saying though. The beauty of the film was these people could fly, jump, and cut through metal with swan gracefullness. However, none could break thier traditons and beliefs. They could not be in love. And, when both couples finally came together. The traditons and beliefs ended both relationships. Sweet movie. Wished a least one couple ended up together, but that would have taken away from the story. Was this review helpful? To sum it up: Amazing. The fight scenes are truly beautiful, and computers aren't actually used a great deal. The storyline is excellent, it is a perfect blend of action and dialogue, with a bit of comedy too. The soundtrack was great, and complimented the movie very well. Ever since the first time I saw this movie Chow Yun Fat (Li Mu Bai) has been one of my all time favourite actors. Crouching Tiger will remain one of my favourite movies of all time for many years to come, it is truly fantastic; if you haven't see it you MUST go down to your local shop and rent it out. This movie is absolutely spectacular. The acting was brilliant, the story was captivating, and the music... the music was stunning. Yo yo ma's gorgeous cello playing was a beautiful companion to this amazing martial arts/fantasy movie. To all of you who disliked it because of the flying, and the unrealness (word? ^^;;) of it, it's not supposed to be a real movie. It's a Chinese fairy tale. This was a great movie that I watch over and over again! Was this review helpful? Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh provide the key roles in this blockbuster of a movie. The fight scenes are more like a dance at some points... because they are so beautifully choreographed that it is a pleasure to watch and you feel immense admiration for the people actually doing the fights! I don't think you could get much better than this film. It's so amazing that I watch it over and over and over again!!!!! See this movie at once! Was this review helpful? This movie is like the worst martial arts or any type movie i have ever seen. Usually when i see a bad movie i laugh becuase it is so dumb, but this was too pathetic to laugh. What's with the flying, like I didn't know they were magic flying people.(no offence)This movie is so totally unreal that I don't even remember watching the last parts.Seriously, how could you rate it a 5 or 4.Like this isn't even martial arts it's all special effects.Don't ever rent it or buy it or anything. One has no need for the subtitling (which I happen to love), as no translation was needed to experience the raw emotions of the characters therein. Absolutely beautiful and stunning cinematography! Sign In 4 out of 5 users found this helpful Posted: 10/25/2002A review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by RBAGH This is how I can assess this unique and powerful martial arts drama:Storyline: Great, wonderful character development and event chronologyActing: the English subtitles are distracting from the visceral beuty, but the English dubbing is almost laughable, however both are worthwhile as the production overcomes these obstacles.Cinematography: Simply amazing, the most beutifully shot movie I've ever seen. The director was responsible for the Matrix and it is evident in the breathtaking fight sequences. The characters are superhuman but it is not unbelievable due to the presentationChoreography: Chow Yun Fat is a solid martial aritst and proved it with his performance, but the real amazement was the skill and effortlessness of Michelle Yeoh, meanwhile Zhang Zi Yi is a newcomer that dominated the story and her screentime. Overall: This movie should withstand the test of time as one of the greatest kung-fu movies, but double time as a great and understated love story. Was this review helpful?
