But little does Conan know that Taramis is planning to betray him, sacrifice the virgin princess, and take over the throne. The plot of "Conan the Destroyer" is considerably better than its predecessor, "Conan the Barbarian" (1982), which simply had Conan avenging the deaths of his parents. Of course, as it’s a sequel, "Destroyer" suffers more than the first movie, but it overcomes some of the usual sequel casualties. This time, Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is accompanied by a new batch of buddies, including Zula (Grace Jones). Also sent along is Bombaata (former basketball star Wilt Chamberlain), one of Taramis’ guards, who has been ordered to kill Conan after the treasure is found. The characters aren’t as good this time around. Why they didn’t just leave the annoying young princess in the desert is beyond me. Her job is to scream whenever the team is encountered by danger. I commented on the humor in "Conan the Barbarian." There is humor in "Conan the Destroyer," too, but it seems forced, and most of the jokes fall flat. (The best joke occurs near the beginning, when Conan meets the camel he punched in the first film.) The movie begins on the wrong foot and doesn’t really accomplish much until the end, when there are some good fight sequences, but then the finale with Conan and a bad FX monster is contrived and silly. Plus, because of a ridiculous PG rating, the violence is hokier. "Conan the Destroyer" really is an unnecessary sequel to a film that wasn’t by any means great or deserved of a sequel. It’s lightweight fare that must be viewed from an unintelligent point of view to enjoy fully. Was this review helpful?
