We saw it on video and it was very good. I'm a Nicole Kidman fan, but don't care for Renee Zellwegger or Jude Law. All of the actors did an excellent job and the story line was good. Definitely worthy of a rental. I wouldn't have been disappointed if I'd seen it at the movies. Was this review helpful? Beautiful...<br> The cast is amazing... there are at least ten big big actors, a dozen recognizable up-and-coming stars and a few people that are dead before they even get to speak :S. But they are all so good... its the kind of acting that makes you fall in love with their characters. <br> It takes place during the Civil War (I know what your thinking- yawn, yawn, another war) BUT that is only a backdrop on what the movie is really about. It follows two people- one,Ada, a woman (Nicole Kidman) struggling to survive on her farm after the death of her father and two, Inman, a man (Jude Law) struggling through injury to return to Cold Mountain where Ada, a woman he hardly knows awaits for him. As you see his journey, the people he meets on the way (Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Philip Seymour Hoffman and more) and what he goes through, Ada struggles through keeping her farm with the help of the tough Ruby (Renee Zellweger), her friends (including Kathy Baker, Brendan Gleeson, JAmes Gammon and more) and the belief the man she waits for is still alive. <br> The acting is unbelievable, the story is sad, funny, happy and touching... it is definetely worth the two and a half hours. There were many great characters, situations and settings. Although the basic love theme was different from GWTW (Scarlett was using men while pining for the one she couldn't have; not waiting patiently for one to return) it was an epic film as well. The "bad guys" were a little more multi-dimensional than usual-you kind of understood them but also learn the lesson of how war can bring out the best or the worse in people. Highly recommended! The good and bad characters are so opposite-spectrum that it seems Kidman and Law's portreyals are Angels sent from Heaven and the opposite characters are hellish demons. There seems to be no un-holsome thoughts to pass through the good characters, likewise, there are absolutely no positive atrubutes in the bad-guys. Law's character reminds of Homer's Oddysus, however with some mal-nurioused sickly child sense. Was this review helpful? Well acted, well written, well directed. Just overall a truly great film. There are so many characters in this film, all contributing something different but equally as entertaining. I recommend this movie for anyone who is picky about what sort of movies they watch, I guarantee you will love it. Was this review helpful? It was so boring, and I found the acting (except for Renee) very flat. I didn't get drawn in to the characters lives. I didn't feel any emotion for them at all. I didn't feel anything they were feeling. I had heard great things about this movie and how I should expect to cry a lot... well I barely sat through it. My boyfriend did not enjoy it at all either. It's not that we don't like drama - it's just that this movie was cliched, boring, too long, and poorly acted. Was this review helpful? I for one was not offended by the nudity in it. The violence in this movie was not all that gory. Yet, people complain that it is a porno and a non-stop violent film. I'd hate to see the movie a lot of these people have seen. I think they were skipping back and forth between Eurotrip and this. In Eurotrip, i would agree. very porno-like. But this movie, being compared to a porno!? No way. A brief 2 seconds of Nicole Kidman's butt and another 2 seconds of her nipple. I'd demand my money back if they consider that a porno! Where the hell did Renee Zellweger's character come from? What happened to Natalie Portman's character? Did he not try to get her out of that hellhole? She did a great job with her charater. I did NOT appreciate all the porn in the movie. This movie should have been rated X with all the porn stuff in it.
