Its a story that is becoming all too real in other parts of the world. Youve got young children shooting one another, drugs being sold, police being bought off, and lives with no hope. Americans think that their ghettos are bad, but in reality they are 10 times better than those in the caribbean, south america or africa. If you want to see it as just a movie, be my guest. The acting, cinematography and dialogue are incredible. But ask yourself, would it be just a movie if you saw these events happening daily on your block? Would it just be a movie if your 6 year old was dodging bullets rather than playing tee-ball? That your entire world is one of despair and violence, with little or no way out? It should be seen as much more than a movie, but as a reminder of how good America and its people still has it. Was this review helpful? What impressed me about City of God was both its urgent social realism and its vibrant, propulsive energy. While the films stark yet colorful images arrest you, Meirelles handling of the issues besetting Brazils slums -- from poverty, lack of access to education and social services, that escalate to violence and the drug trade -- is complex and responsible, but without being preachy. The main character Rockets camera (apparently representing Meirelles own lens) seemed to be an impartial witness to the proceedings and thus the violence becomes even more brutal and devastating because it seemed endemic and thoughtless, coming from the films characters. The name Ciudade de Dios, the favela where the interweaving narratives in this film are set, could be no further from the truth of the realities in that community.
Favela Rising, the new documentary I saw, appears to attest to the continuing resonance of City of God. The docu, on the other hand, deals with a Brazilian ex-drug dealer who starts a musical movement called Afro-Reggae to keep young people in his favela away from violence. While City of God ended tragically, Favela Rising ended on a more optimistic note. Nonetheless, both are compelling to watch and experience. Was this review helpful? The reality that is experienced in this movie is more like a documentary that a movie, it shows the situation that many pan american people are in when they live in a ghetto. I feel this is one of the best movie I have watched in a a very long time that actually has meaning. Was this review helpful? With a plot that truley reflects and defines the harsh reality of life in Rio De Janero's most notoreous slum.
Seen through the eyes of Rocket, an amatur photographer who grows up alongsie the citys biggest and most reputable voilent, drug lord, 'Lil Z'
The story is both frightening and compelling, scenes encourage laugter and tears.
The irony of the tagline is true to the reflecton of life within the city; 'Fight and you'l never survive, Run and you'l never escape'.

Most of the scennes iI think it was on the "favela" that is a little poor place in Rio de Janeiro. The movie was Good but it was too violent, and sad Was this review helpful? I rarely use the term MASTERPIECE in regards to filmmaking, this is one of those times. Anyone who appreciates film should look at this TOUR DE FORCE. This will set a standard in filmmaking period. I only wish that it had not ended. I'm only to give it five stars, but I will put this film as one of my all time favorites. Was this review helpful? This production was absolutely captivating: from the stark poverty striken street scenes with cherub faced gun toting children, to the gritty photography captured by the movie's narrator, Rocket. City of God is a must see. If you could sit through "Crouching Tiger," City of God is ten times better. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 2/17/2004A review of City of God by Blu0218 The film, "City of God" is an excellent film. It shows that there will always be crime and people who rule with cruelty. The film introduces a group of youngster who fall into a life of crime, then they are replaced by younger men who are even more brutal who are then replaced by even younger cruel leaders who have no reason or knowledge of why they act as they do. The film, "City of God" shows the world that there will always be a Saddam Hussein, George Bush, or other tyrant in society to terrorize the world. It will never stop. Was this review helpful? This movie is about peoples real lives. Has our culture gotten so desensitized that we forget this. As I watch this movie it tugged at my heart and I felt over whelmed with emotion. Kids as young as 6 or 7 killing each other and using drugs and all we can talk about is "this is a real gangster movie" or "that the shots are great". I think all of you need to watch the movie again and think about what your life would be like if all the kids on your block or even in your home felt like just saying the hell with it all and started gunning each other down like they where playing a video game. People please wake up.<br> Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 1/27/2004A review of City of God by Kabongpai Outstanding movie. Was this review helpful?
