Yes, there is a ton of violence, but for some reason I did not find it to be gratuitous - the violence was poignant and shocking, like one adrenaline filled roller coaster ride. My mouth was agape and my eyes wide with shock and suspense the entire duration of the film. Other (few) reviewers are correct: they explain the chaotic state of the world by alluding that it got to be that way from the political policies of the years prior, and they state that the cause of infertility is unknown, though give several possible reasons why. The movie HAS an ending - maybe not an ending you want, but an ending nonetheless. Still, it was a little disappointing that the audience is left wondering whether the Human Project is real, and if real, whether they're a safe organization. What's with the Was this review helpful? Really quite unique and unlike anything that has been
done before. There were some areas that stretch credibility, but, all in all, Children of Men is a powerful and most enjoyable moive. I would see it again. Was this review helpful? From the looks of the DVD case, it looked like it would be action packed but I thought wrong. This was actually the worst movie I have ever seen ever MUCH worse than the cheesiest Sci-fi channel movie youve ever seen, and worser than a booty shaking video on youtube. This movie just fails ar everything it had a intriguing thing in mind(mysterious infertility in the human race) but they didnt have anything to show for it in the actual movie. The one pregnant woman is running away from people, to who knows where, and when they get there, they continue running..When the finally escape to wherever they are trying to get to, the movie cuts off..Seriously, I wish I could unwatch this movie, get my money back, and make sure no one else has to watse their time with this bull. If anyone should think this movie is good in any kind of way except being absolute crap, this must be the first piece of entertainment they have ever come in cotnact with. I so desperately wish you could give this lower than a 1, but a 1 is alot more than this crap deserves. Was this review helpful? Same worn out story and the same crack pot, conspiracy theorists saying its the best movie ever showing what our future is going to be like. FYI, there have been dozens of these movies made since the 70s and most of them are B-movies ,straight to video. But at least they showed plenty of tits and ass from some hot babes so you didnt fall asleep like the boring Children of Men. The only reason this movie wasnt straight to video is because it was a big budget hollywood film with A-list stars. Well, putting lipstick on a pig doesnt make it pretty. Booooring! i wasnt dissapointed. Its difficult to understand what the director is after as one is filming ina disjointed and out-of-sequence way.I do remember the DAYS of rehearsal with no film being shot, to capyure in one long take, the action shots. And boy did it pay off.so easy to cut andre-set ,but that looses so much of ones involvement with what is going on. I think Alphonsos film is a fantastic work.and thats not being biased. (much) Was this review helpful? This is the best movie of 2006, because not only of its cinematography, but because of the simple message it conveys. If we continue on the path which we are on now, the world will divulge itself into chaos. This movie proves that even if chaos exists, there are still things that are pure and good in this world, in this instance, procreation. Anyone who does not like this movie get back to me in 30 yrs.....cause it will be damn close to the world portrayed in this film...absolutely the best film i have seen in a long time. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 1/28/2007A review of Children of Men by PrairieLight1 One of the most powerful scenes in modern filmmaking is that of the all-encompassing respect paid a woman and her newborn baby girl in the desparate vision of the future, Children of Men. It is signifigant that of three major films releaed in 2006- Children of Men, Apocalypto and Pans Labyrinth- all have woman giving birth and the creation of new life as the symbol of Hope for humanity in a world gone mad with war and violence. The senseless barbarity of the men in these movies is counterbalanced with the indomitable strength and courage of the women. It is as though western patriarchal society is finally admitting the futility of war and acknowledging the power of Woman to do that which is of true and lasting value- to bring forth new life and in so doing, perpetuate the idea of family and the importance of personal relationships as being a vital component of who we are as human beings.
In doing so in these films, the archetype figure of Woman is shown to be far above the petty, limited arrogance and brutality of Man. The allegorical Mothers fierce determination to give and protect new life fills us all with hope that we are safe and that in spite of war, terrorism, violence and the arrogance and beastial savagery of man that humanity will rise above these baser instincts and step into a more highly evolved conscious way of being.
That is what I got from this film. The baby was definately a Baby Jesus figure with all the implications of hope for humanity that His birth entailed. This film was a marvellous vision and a powerful warning. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 1/26/2007A review of Children of Men by LoloLauren23 I went to see Children of Men with knowing absolutly nothing about it except that it stared Clive Owen and Julianne Moore. What I found was an amazing tale full of twists and turns and amazing cinamatography. The movie is so frightening because it takes place so close in time to now. It was scary to know that if this did become reality I would be a part of it. What I really liked was that you never knew what was going to happen, it was as if you were there living it with the charecters. You were on a journey with them and you wanted them to succeed. What was interesting was that when it came down to it the film resembles what I would imagine a modern day concentration camp to look like. This movie was sad and twisted, filled with a pleathora of irony and at times humor, you could sense the desperation taht these people must be feeling and at the same time it left me with a feeling of beauty and hope. I loved it and I would reccomend it to anyone. Was this review helpful? Simply put, I should have spent the money on some downers and saved myself the trip to the cinema.
Clive Owen, an excellent actor, is caught up in a contrived, melodramatic story that meanders all over with occasional attempts at explanation with overused symbolism. As for the acclaimed chase scenes, Ive seen better action in Bullitt with Steve McQueen made over 40 years ago.
The topper is the ending. Its enough to make you yearn for a re-release of 2001 A Space Odyssey. Get a new agent, Clive, or exercise better script selection. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
