This was far and away one of the best movies of the decade. Acting was superb, credible to the story-line and delightfully presented. Both for reasonable factuality and high entertainment value, I would strongly suggest not missing this film. Were I in a position to award Academy Awards, this film would garner Best Picture and the cast best actor, actress, supporting actor and actress awards. Was this review helpful? That is why we need TERM LIMITS on these guys because they become too powerfull and forget whey they are there. JULIA ROBERTS is a big LIBERAL and did this movie just to show how bad America is. All liberals want to show how bad America is and they can not mumble the words "This is the greatest nation on the face of the earth". They always blame America first! Yes, we need to build schools, education is the only way ignorant Peoples will ever get out of their downward spirals. Right now, all they learn is Hate for the West. We send them our Porn movies and other Hollywood movies that depict the worst of our society. Hollywood can't find a suitable subject to make a decent movie and they make "crap" for us to review. YOUNG PEOPLE.....don't just vote but study first and learn what to vote for, FREEDOM, LIBERTY and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Taxes, more government control, more laws from corrupt politicians, handouts in the name of poverty, universal healthcare that will discourage new medical discoveries, open borders to allow terrorists easy access to America, are not what this Nation was founded upon. So, because of politician Charlie Wilson (who drinks all day and uses drugs) America spent 1 billion to arm Afganistan (which is a little worrisome) to fight the Soviets which led to the end of communism. I'll admit that is an important piece of history. My advice, if you're interested in that, is to rent it later. Was this review helpful? Jan. 5th- and Boy!! WHAT A GREAT MOVIE!! Smart script, darkly funny, extremely well-cast, and well-acted, edited and directed. I recall seeing Dan Rather on TV, and watching all of this unravel for Russia as I gave birth to my 3rd. son-Apr.'88. Little did we know the probable story until now; and, yes, what a difference that school would have made. PLEASE SEE THIS MOVIE !!! And THINK HARD about who you vote for in this election year. Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Good Representation of a Great BookPosted: 1/5/2008A review of Charlie Wilson's War by LAcelluloid Geo Crile’s, “Charlie Wilson’s War” is on my list of all-time top 10 non-fiction books. However, after viewing trailers that used Jimi Hendrix’s :“Watch Tower” and Don McLean’s “American Pie” I was skeptical. The period is the mid-late 80’s and these songs were many years earlier. This, coupled with what I suspected to be some miscasting and early cool reviews caused me to enter the theater with low expectations. However, to my surprise, the movie was downright enjoyable. Hoffman turned in an exceptional portrayal of Gust Avrakotos. Hanks as a 6'4" good natured, goof-off, Texas congressman was adequate in the role. Thankfully, the trailer songs were not used in the movie.
I fear this film will consume viewers under the age of 35, particularly those who are disinterested in the fall of USSR, the cold war or 80's politics and personalities. For those not aware of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the film may well seem like a disconnected yarn, rather than the stranger-than-fiction true story it is. It is humor in the midst of tragedy, courage in the face of cowardice, profound in the face of glibness. I read well-meaning reviews that I felt simply did not understand the movie. It is neither wholly a comedy, tragedy, mystery or suspense. It is simply, a true, extremely implausible story. From all accounts, Charlie Wilson was shallow and fun-loving. However, people sometime become affected by some turn, some unforeseen external force that drives the soul in a specific direction, dedicating ourselves to that force. It may be any number of things; love of family, business or sometimes it is a cause.
The book is not political in nature as much as it is historical. I was pleased the screenplay, by A.Sorkin, was devoid of political statements that were absent in the Crile story or epilogue. The viewer may judge if this is an accurate portrayal of actual events or not, but the depiction of the Crile story is faithful. Kudos! Was this review helpful? I loved this dark humor in the face of the worst of human nature and the way the world works. It is a smart film.

Charlie was right about the whole deal, we, the us congress, blew it in the end.
Rough language but remember this is Washington DC. Hanks did a great job as Charlie - great casting for each part particlulary the goofy US diplomat in Pakistan. I have seen the same type in other countries.

It sort of wanted to be a dark comedy, then sort of a serious war movie. Everyone is miscast, and the opening scene with a naked Hanks (was that him or a double?) is totally unbelievable. However, it did go by pretty fast and I never once looked at my watch or nodded off to sleep, so 2 stars. It isn't really AWFUL, but comes pretty close. Perhaps not the worst of 2007, but close.
