The film is advertised as a mystery slash crime drama based on a true story. It's actually a dark, moody, depressing, disturbing, slow moving, axe-murdering, blood-spewing (sorry about the spoiler but this is something no one mentions in any of the film's reviews or comments but I would've appreciated knowing beforehand so I could've avoided seeing it) horror film which is when I walked out of the room while my husband stuck with it. I did watch the last few minutes with him thinking there would be some kind of resolution. Nope - just more horror with no finale. Like the other reviewer, I regret seeing even part of this one. Jones (Jeffrey Donovan) assures her that her true son has been found. One person who is certain and willing to help her cause of revealing the LAPD’s mistake is activist Reverend Briegleb (John Malkovich). This movie takes place in the late 1920’s in Los Angeles, California’s prominent suburbs. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this film is more than just a drama-it is a mysterious and thrilling film filled with agony and despair that is conveyed throughout the film by Angelina Jolie’s outstanding performance.
Commencing in the year 1928, one afternoon when Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) departs for work, she leaves her 9 year-old son, Walter (Gattlin Griffith), home alone with the agony in the back of her head that something might happen to him. Intuition being right, when she returns home, Walter is gone. After extensive searching, she calls the police in hopes that they would aid to find her son, but because of a “technicality” they are unable to begin searching until 24 hours have passed. Filled with distress, Christine Collins awaits the return of her son and after several weeks have passed the LAPD alleges they have found her son. With joy and conviction Christine Collins follows Commissioner J.J. Jones (Jeffrey Donovan) to meet her son, only to discover that the LAPD had committed a huge mistake from which they would deny in order to avoid ridicule from the press. Throughout the rest of the movie, Christine Collins, with the help of Reverend Briegleb (John Malkovich), challenge the LAPD to admit their mistake and bring her true son back.
The film brought out the bad and infamous side of the LAPD and due to their ignorance and arrogance a lost child was presumed found and an unknown child was forced to live a lie trying to convince a ... It is a bit drawn out, but the drama is there...and the acting was well played out.
This movie was more of a "documentary" of the time frame to me, regarding the rights of women, and how women were treated. It is so great that Women now have rights and we can speak our minds. This woman Christine was amazing because she was that Single mother when it wasnt ok to be a single mother, she was raising her son to have morals and values, and she had the guts to stand up and tell the world (the press) what was going on with her experiences wtih the LAPD and finding her son when no one else would listen.
On another note, I always thought the LAPD was corrupt, I just didnt know it was horrible even then. It makes me sad that no one has values anymore or cares about something unless the "media" is involved. At least there are a few good cops left, I just dont think there are enough. Im not a big fan of Jolie but she did a wonderful job in this. She was so believable. The fact that this story was true made it even more gutwrenching. I cried and I loved it. Angelina Jolie deserves to be recognized again as the wonderful dramatic actress she is! Yes, it was heart-wrenching, and the fact it was based on a true story only re-enforces what we already know, that bad things do happen...But...there is always HOPE! Was this review helpful? She did justice to the story as did Clint Eastwood as Director. Great movie as well as great acting by all the Actors. Angelina Jolie-Pitt is a contender for an Oscar as is Clint Eastwood for Best Director. The movie itself also up for the award of "Best Movie". Was this review helpful? As good or better than Unforgiven & another example of critics being dead wrong. Was this review helpful? The acting was superb, it was one of those movies where you forget your watching a movie... it was that good.
The mood was set perfectly, Eastwood did a fabulous job gearing the visuals to the plot and script. Was a bit dreary, but it fit the bill.
There is really nothing more I can say about it without giving away the plot.
Definately a FIVE STAR without a doubt. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 11/10/2008A review of Changeling by Dizzle702 This movie was well put together. The time and place was really on point. Angelina Jolie has really outdone herself on this one. Was this review helpful? I thought this was just a movie and when I found out it was based on a true story I was horrified. These were someone's children and it was way, way to graphic and way to sad to do a movie about. there is no happy ending and I wish I had never go to see it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/4/2008A review of Changeling by lvmvs Very good movie from the acting to the sets of the era in LA. Amazing, true story. Was over 2 hours but flew by being so good and interesting. Search Wikipedia free encyclopedia and see Wineville Chicken Coop Murders. Tells the story and there are LA Times archive stories with photos. Very sad that a boy is taken and unbelievable that a bratty kid would claim to be the missing boy. That some people are so evil is scary, glad people like Northcott are few and far between. Was this review helpful?
