It's not a surprise, I suppose, given the awful the preview. I've read reviews by other viewers and am shocked to hear how much some people hated it. If this is the worst movie they've seen, they have very limited experience. Ever see War of the Worlds? Black Dahlia? How about Pearl Harbor? I gave Catch and Release four out of five stars because of the slight predictability, but otherwise, I found the story to be entertaining, the cinematography quite lovely, the soundtrack gorgeous, and Kevin Smith, Jennifer Garner, and Juliette Lewis very good in their parts. I was skeptical when I rented it, but enjoyed myself from the beginning to the roll of the credits. I like films with characters I feel I might actually KNOW in real life, can imagine them living next door to me. If you want a sympathetic movie experience about PEOPLE in the real world, forego Transformers this weekend and rent Catch and Release. Was this review helpful? It definitely disappointed. The movie was entirely predictable - down to the last scene on the beach. So many of the scenes came out of nowhere... who buddies up to the woman that her fiance cheated with??? No self-respecting woman would do that. My friend and I were rooting for the roommate who pined for her... not the loser who screwed someone in a bathroom at his friends funeral... there were no redeeming qualities for him. When it became clear this is the loser she would wind up with (very early in the movie... predictable!), the movie lost all interest for me. Was this review helpful? This movie is really good to go see with your friends. Kevin Smith did an amazing job in playing Sam. Also, Jennifer Gardner did a good job in her character. It tried too much too soon and didnt go deep enough at all. Each character was barely there and there were some ridiculous, unneeded subplots. Part of the movie was a comedy, part was very touching. The unevenness of the reviews here probably have to do with the fact that is a very atypical romantic treatment. . . which deals with the genuine trials that accompany the death of a loved one. . . and the questions that inevitably come. Did I truly know this person at all?
Since I have lost a loved one, I related to the questions and the feeling of disillusionment. If anything, the timing of the new romance-- coming so soon on the heels of losing someone she loved-- is a bit suspect. But since the time line is not specified, I could cut them some slack.
Jennifer Garner is terrific. And the mens roles are far from stereotypical. I really enjoyed the movie and recommend it. Was this review helpful? The guy with the beard (dont know his name) made the show - he was extremely funny and made the movie that much better.
Jennifer Garner did well but shes much better at comedy than all the crying in this movie she did!

Big mistake on my part. Some of what I saw in the trailer wasnt even in the movie and what was there was pretty lame. The story was unbelieveable, the acting was bad, and it couldnt even keep the interest of the three 12 year old girls sitting behind us. I wont get him to go to another chick flick for quite a while. Jennifer Garner did look a little plain, but Timothy Olyphant is to die for! The movie is not like any other, but that does not make it bad. It is a different kind of romantic comedy, but the romance and the comedy are definitely there. I could not stop laughing in some parts, and in the other I simply wanted to switch places with Jennifer so I could be kissing Timothy. I would definitely recommend it, but go with an open mind. Jennifer Garner first of all cannot carry a movie, it was just plain awful from beginning to end. Poorly written, boring, sloooooow, not even worth a rental.
