The movie catch a fire was a really good movie because it talked about having freedom and learning how to stand up for yourself @ the end it was a tear jerker so bring kleenex it was based on a true story about an African who wants to be free and had to fight for it

This film is fascinating on several levels. It is a true story, set in apartheid South Africa, which is often a recipe for a preachy film. This film avoids that, however, as the hero is shown with numerous flaws, and the villain is shown with numerous virtues, with all the ambiguities, ironies and blurring that you should expect with a true story. I thought there were a few rough spots in the story line, and I would have appreciated some closure with a few of the peripheral characters, but these were very minor flaws. The film is elevated by the solid performances of Luke, who gets better with every film, and Robbins, whose previous work has been unimpressive to me, but who is excellent in this film. Also, the ending was especially powerful. Finally, I like the themes and messages of this film, including its insights terrorism, torture, power and freedom. Maybe we will learn something from the past? Hmmmmm.... Nahhh, probably not. But, this is a superior film, and well worth the price of admission.

I thought this movie was well done and that Derek Luke is great as the principal actor. I think with every quality movie that he does, he improves a great deal. It proves that not too long ago things like this were happening and still are. I think a lot of white people will feel too guilty to see and understand this great movie. The main reason being is that they feel guilty. The werent any that attended the showing that I went to. In summary, Catch A Fire was an action-packed, heartbreaking and uplifting film. Derek Luke deserves a standing ovation.

Interesting story but a very weak screenplay. Its only 102 minutes and it still seems long. The first 60 minutes are a drag as they are trying to develop the characters but there is no need to do that. It just needed more of a story. South African black man accused of sabotage but he is not guilty but the white police harrass him and his family until he decides to do the sabotage and he gets caught. He goes to jail and then Nelson Madela comes into power and he is set free and he forgives his tormentors. Now you know the whole story and you can use your money to go see something good like The Departed. Your welcome.

The entire movie centered around an average man in extraordinary circumstances. He wasnt a saint he was a realy person who just happened to be alive during a period of political turbulence. It centers around a man who is family oriented but, is ultimately accused of being a terroist and finally resists the government which wrongly tortured him and his wife. This is definately an action packed movie and is overall a great see movie. I also think it would be suitable for younger audiences as it does not have the violence you would expect from such a harrowing tale.

Posted: 10/25/2006A review of Catch a Fire by Charles1030
Its a sign of apartheid wounds healing and moviegoing expectations maturing that Catch a Fire is as morally complex as it is and that I wish it were even more rigorous perhaps Shawn Slovo, the daughter of famous white South African activists (she told her murdered mothers story in A World Apart), was not the best screenwriter for the job of grappling with ambiguity. At any rate, Robbins tamps Vos into a muted man who can never be written off as a cartoon devil, and Luke, in a passionate performance reminiscent of his work in Antwone Fisher, doesnt hide Chamussos flaws. With the same affinity for stories of culture clash he showed in The Quiet American and Rabbit-Proof Fence, director Phillip Noyce embraces the tale with gusto, lighting up a picture that is as much a taut action saga as it is a cautionary history lesson.
